THIS BULLETIN IS BEING ISSUED TO REVISE THE PROCEDURE FOR DISABLING/ENABLING THE SIR SYSTEM IN SECTION 9J OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
ON-VEHICLE SERVICE
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
WHEN YOU ARE PERFORMING SERVICE ON OR NEAR THE SIR COMPONENTS OR THE SIR WIRING, YOU MUST DISABLE THE SIR SYSTEM. USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE TO TEMPORARILY DISABLE THE SIR SYSTEM. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURE COULD CAUSE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, PERSONAL INJURY, OR UNNECESSARY SIR SYSTEM REPAIRS.
THE INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SENSING AND DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM) MAINTAINS A RESERVE ENERGY SUPPLY. WHEN THE VEHICLE POWER IS INSUFFICIENT TO CAUSE DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAGS, THE RESERVE ENERGY SUPPLY PROVIDES THE DEPLOYMENT POWER. DEPLOYMENT POWER IS AVAILABLE FOR AS MUCH AS 10 MINUTES AFTER DISCONNECTING THE VEHICLE POWER BY ANY OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS:
1. TURN OFF THE IGNITION SWITCH.
2. REMOVE THE AIR BAG FUSE THAT PROVIDES POWER TO THE SDM.
3. DISCONNECT THE VEHICLE BATTERY FROM THE VEHICLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.
PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE PREVENTS DEPLOYING OF THE AIR BAGS FROM THE RESERVE ENERGY SUPPLY POWER.
DISABLING THE SIR SYSTEM -
(FIGURES 1 AND 2)
TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE STRAIGHT AHEAD POSITION. REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT:
1. THE AIR BAG FUSE FROM THE LH I/P BUSSED ELECTRICAL CENTER (LH I/P BEC). REFER TO POWER DISTRIBUTION, CELL 10 IN ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
2. THE CONNECTOR POSITION ASSURANCE (CPA) AND THE YELLOW 2-WAY DRIVER SAFING CONNECTOR LOCATED IN THE LH I/P BUSSED ELECTRICAL CENTER (LH I/P BEC).
3. THE CONNECTOR POSITION ASSURANCE (CPA) AND THE YELLOW 2-WAY PASSENGER SAFING CONNECTOR LOCATED IN THE RH I/P BUSSED ELECTRICAL CENTER (RH I/P BEC).
WITH THE AIR BAG FUSE REMOVED AND THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE RUN POSITION, THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATES. THIS IS A NORMAL OPERATION AND DOES NOT INDICATE AN SIR SYSTEM MALFUNCTION.
ENABLING THE SIR SYSTEM -
(FIGURES 1 AND 2)
REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH.
INSTALL OR CONNECT:
1. THE CONNECTOR POSITION ASSURANCE (CPA) AND THE YELLOW 2-WAY PASSENGER SAFING CONNECTOR LOCATED IN THE RH I/P BUSSED ELECTRICAL CENTER (RH I/P BEC).
2. THE CONNECTOR POSITION ASSURANCE (CPA) AND THE YELLOW 2-WAY DRIVER SAFING CONNECTOR LOCATED IN THE LH I/P BUSSED ELECTRICAL CENTER (LH I/P BEC).
3. THE AIR BAG FUSE TO THE LH I/P BUSSED ELECTRICAL CENTER (LH I/P BEC). REFER TO POWER DISTRIBUTION, CELL 10 IN ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.
STAYING WELL AWAY FROM BOTH AIR BAGS, TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE RUN POSITION. VERIFY THAT THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP FLASHES SEVEN TIMES AND THEN STAYS OFF. IF THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP DOES NOT OPERATE AS DESCRIBED, PERFORM THE SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK.
J 38715-A SIR DRIVER/PASSENGER LOAD TOOL AND ADAPTERS
USE THE J 38715-A SIR DRIVER/PASSENGER LOAD TOOL ONLY WHEN THE SIR DIAGNOSTICS CALL FOR IT. THE LOAD TOOL IS USED AS A DIAGNOSTIC AID AND A SAFETY DEVICE TO PREVENT INADVERTENT INFLATOR MODULE DEPLOYMENT.
ONE OF THE SMALL CONNECTORS WITH ADAPTER J 38715-30 IS USED TO SUBSTITUTE THE LOAD OF THE INFLATABLE RESTRAINT STEERING WHEEL MODULE. IT IS CONNECTED AT THE TOP OF THE COLUMN TO THE INFLATABLE RESTRAINT STEERING WHEEL MODULE COIL.
USE THE LOAD TOOL ONLY WHEN SPECIFICALLY CALLED FOR IN THE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.

GENERAL MOTORS BULLETINS ARE INTENDED FOR USE BY PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIANS, NOT A "DO-IT-YOURSELFER". THEY ARE WRITTEN TO INFORM THOSE TECHNICIANS OF CONDITIONS THAT MAY OCCUR ON SOME VEHICLES, OR TO PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN THE PROPER SERVICE OF A VEHICLE. PROPERLY TRAINED TECHNICIANS HAVE THE EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND KNOW-HOW TO DO A JOB PROPERLY AND SAFELY. IF A CONDITION IS DESCRIBED, DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE BULLETIN APPLIES TO YOUR VEHICLE, OR THAT YOUR VEHICLE WILL HAVE THAT CONDITION.
