THIS SERVICE UPDATE INCLUDES VEHICLES IN DEALER/RETAILER INVENTORY AND CUSTOMER VEHICLES THAT RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR ANY REASON, AND WILL EXPIRE AT THE END OF THE INVOLVED VEHICLE'S NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY PERIOD.

Purpose

This bulletin provides a service procedure to replace the Navigation Interface Module (NIM) on certain 2007 model year Chevrolet Lumina and Caprice vehicles equipped with factory fitted or dealer installed Satellite Navigation The replacement NIM has been upgraded from earlier specification to overcome reported issues of lockup, causing the satellite navigation system to become inoperative

This service procedure should be completed on involved vehicles currently in dealership/retailer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer/retailer for any type of service as soon as possible but no later than October 1, 2008, at which time this bulletin will expire.

Note: Vehicles within the range affected by this action, and which are not rectified prior to expiration of the proactive upgrade but suffer subsequent failure which would be corrected by this action should be rectified according to normal ‘New Vehicle Warranty’ procedure.

Vehicles Involved

    • A list of vehicles with factory fit Full map and turn By Turn Satnav systems is attached to this bulletin as appendix ‘D’.
    • Additional vehicles which have had dealer fit accessory satellite navigation system installed may also be affected. The ‘version’ number can be displayed following procedure A attached. Follow Procedure A on the attached rework instructions to confirm version, and determine whether there is a need to replace the NIM, or update disc player software.

Special Tools Information

    • Software for the SATNAV player will be provided on two separate disks to cover both the Full Map and Turn by Turn Satellite Navigation System. One set will be sent to each Dealer with this letter.
    • Dealers must assume responsibility and accountability for the care and security of these SATNAV software CDs.

Procedure A: Checking SATNAV Version

Full Map System

Determine the SATNAV player software version number by using the following procedure.

  1. Turn on the radio and press the NAV button.
  2. Push in the Left radio knob.
  3. Select Nav settings.

  7. Note the version number that is displayed after the letter A:. Record this figure as "Old Version Number" in the table on the Technician Checklist then continue to Step 6.
  8. Check NIM part numbers by carrying out the following procedure:
  9. • Check the NIM part number with Tech 2 or by removing the NIM and reading the part number on the label. Refer relevant service information.
    • Compare the SATNAV player software version number (as per step 5 above), and NIM part number with Table 1 (Full Map system) and take the action required as directed in table 1.

Turn By Turn System

Determine the SATNAV player software version number by using the following procedure.

  1. Press the NAV button on the steering wheel controls.
  2. Select Settings.

  6. Note the version number that is displayed after the letter A:. Record this figure as "Old Version Number" in the table on the Technician Checklist then continue to step 5.
  7. Check the NIM part numbers by carrying out the following procedure:
  8. • Check the NIM part number with Tech 2 or by removing the NIM and reading the part number on the label. Refer relevant service information.
    • Compare the SATNAV player software version number (as per step 4 above), and NIM part number with Table 2 and take the action required as directed in table 2.

Procedure B: Full Map SATNAV Update

Note: If the NIM was checked as part of procedure A and found to be part number 92207125 then proceed directly to step 8, otherwise start at step 1.

  1. Open Glove box. Turn off ignition and remove key. Open the passenger’s front door (LHF) and then open and close the driver’s door. Important: Wait until the blue lights on the SATNAV unit (in the glove box) go out (approx 1 minute).
  2. Remove passenger front foot well hush panel which holds the Navigation Interface Module.. Refer relevant Service Information.

  3. Object Number: 2088860  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect NIM electrical connector (4).
  5. Unscrew NIM (1) from Hush panel (5) by removing NIM retaining screws (3).
  6. Check the part number on the NIM and record on the "Technician Checklist".
  7. • If the part number is 92207125 then refit the existing NIM. New part is not required- return to parts store.
    • If the part number is not 92207125 then proceed to step 6.
  8. Fit the new NIM (P/N 92207125), fit and tighten NIM retaining screws and connect electrical connector.
  9. Refit hush panel.
  10. Ensure the vehicle battery is fully charged. Attach a fully charged booster battery or alternatively start the car and locate in a suitable position where it can be left to idle for approximately 40 minutes undisturbed. Battery Voltage is critical during the next section.

    Warning:  DO NOT TURN VEHICLE OFF OR ALLOW BATTERY TO DISCHARGE OR PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE SATNAV PLAYER MAY OCCUR.

    DO NOT CARRY OUT ANY OTHER WORK ON THE VEHICLE DURING THIS PROCEDURE.

  12. Attach the warning notice supplied in appendix E to the vehicle in a prominent location to avoid anyone accidentally turning the vehicle off or disconnecting the booster battery.
  13. Turn ignition on (if vehicle not running). Turn on radio (if not already on) and turn Nav on by pressing NAV button (if not already on). Turn off all other power consuming devices (headlights etc).

  15. With car running or booster battery attached eject the SATNAV MAP disc from the SATNAV player in the glove box by pressing the eject button. The message "No DVD! Please insert Navigation DVD" will appear on the radio/SATNAV display..

  17. Insert the "Full MAP" SATNAV software update disc, part number L3SW458, into the SATNAV player.

  18. Object Number: 2088866  Size: SH
  19. The disk should auto run. A series of messages will appear on the screen similar to what is shown above.

  21. The first stage of the update will take approx 2 minutes. When finished the following screen will be displayed.
  22. Rotate the left radio knob to highlight "Download HMI- SW" and depress LH radio knob to select this option.

  23. Object Number: 2088869  Size: SH
  24. The SATNAV unit will now carry out part 2 of the update. This will take no more than 15 minutes. As series of messages will be displayed on the screen similar to what is shown above.

  25. Object Number: 2088870  Size: SH
  26. After stage 2 has finished the radio/SATNAV display will revert back to the radio screen or may go blank. Stage 3 will start automatically and will take no more than 15 minutes.
  27. Note: After the screen reverts back to the radio display or goes blank during stage 3, you will need to press the NAV button to view the progress or to determine if the update has finished.

  28. After stage 3 has completed the display will go back to the screen shown above. (Provided the NAV button was pressed after stage 2 finished as per step 17).
  29. Using the left hand radio knob, select "Cancel".
  30. Eject the download disc from the SATNAV player.

  32. Insert the MAP disc into the SATNAV player. Another update may take place which will take approx 2 minutes.
  33. Wait until this update finishes and for the SATNAV system to be initialised and ready for normal use.
  34. Turn off the ignition and remove the key. Open and close the driver’s door. Wait until the blue lights on the SATNAV player go out.
  35. All vehicles built on or prior to 29/03/07 will also require the instrument cluster to be reprogrammed from TIS DVD #05/2007 or later (TIS2WEB preferred). Refer table 3 and carry out SPS programming of the instrument cluster if required.
  36. Vehicle built on or prior to 29/03/07 - SPS program the instrument cluster from TIS DVD #05/2007 or later than continue with Step 25.

    Vehicle built from 30/03/2007 onwards -- SPS programming NOT required. Continue with Step 25.

  37. Turn the ignition back on and test the operation of the SATNAV player.
  38. Record the SATNAV version number by using the following procedure.
  39. Turn on the radio and press the NAV button.
  40. Push in the Left radio knob.

  46. Note the version number that is displayed after the letter A: (refer figure 16). Record this figure as "New Version Number" in the table on the Technician checklist.
  47. The replaced NIM is to be retained in a secure location and appropriately labelled ready for disposal instruction to be provided by GMODC.

Procedure C: Turn By Turn SATNAV Upate

Note: If the NIM was checked as part of procedure A and found to be part number 92207125 then proceed directly to step 8, otherwise start at step 1.

  1. Open Glove box. Turn off ignition and remove key. Open the passenger front (LHF) door. Open and close the driver’s door. Important: Wait until the blue lights on the SATNAV unit (in the glove box) go out (approx 1 minute).

  3. Remove passenger front foot well hush panel which holds the Navigation Interface Module. Refer relevant Service Information.

  8. • If the part number is 92207125 then refit the existing NIM. Return the unused NIM to parts store
    • If the part number is not 92207125 then proceed to step 6.
  9. Fit new NIM (P/N 92207125), fit and tighten NIM retaining screws and connect electrical connector.
  10. Refit hush panel.
  11. Ensure battery is fully charged. Attach a fully charged booster battery or alternatively start the car and locate in a suitable position where it can be left to idle for about 40 minutes undisturbed. Battery Voltage is critical during the next section.
  12. Warning:

  15. Press the NAV button on the steering wheel controls to display the NAV screen in the instrument panel cluster (IPC).
  16. Eject the MAP DVD from the SATNAV unit by pressing the eject button.

  18. Insert the "Turn by Turn" software update CD, Part number L1SW451, into the SATNAV unit.
  19. The IPC will display the following message: "Invalid Disc! Please insert navigation DVD".

  21. After a short time the CD will auto run and various messages will be displayed in the IPC. This will take approximately 2 minutes.

  23. When this has completed the IPC will display "Download HMI-SW". Using the left scroll wheel on the steering wheel controls, select "Download HMI-SW" and press the scroll wheel (enter) to start the download process. This will take approximately 15 minutes.

  25. After the download has completed the IPC display will revert back to the message "Download HMI-SW". Select "cancel" with the left hand scroll wheel and press the scroll wheel (enter).
  26. Eject the CD from the SATNAV unit.
  27. Insert the MAP disc into the SATNAV player. Another update may take place which will take approx 2 minutes.
  28. Wait until this update finishes and for SATNAV system to be initialised and ready for normal use.
  29. Turn off the ignition and remove the key. Open and close the driver’s door. Wait until the blue lights on the SATNAV player go out.
  30. All vehicles built on or prior to 29/03/07 will also require the instrument cluster to be reprogrammed from TIS DVD #05/2007 or later (TIS2WEB preferred).
  31.  - Build date: Vehicle built prior to 29/03/07 / Action Required: SPS program instrument cluster from TIS DVD#05/2007 or later then continue with Step 23.
     - Build date: Vehicle built from 29/03/07 onwards / Action Required: SPS programming not required. Continue with Step 23.
  32. Test the operation of the SATNAV player.
  33. Record the SATNAV version number by using the following procedure.
