CD Mechanical Error Causing Excessive Current Draw

Subject:CD Mechanical Error (Replace Radio)

Models:2007 Chevrolet Caprice, Lumina (Export)

Condition

Customers may comment that the radio display shows an error message such as "CD Error" or "Mechanical Error".

Technicians may find the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) set:

    • B1243 - CD player load or eject malfunction
    • B1245 - CD changer malfunction/high temperature
    • B1248 - CD changer load/unload mechanism stuck

Alternatively, the Integrated Radio Chassis (IRC) may have no DTCs or error messages but may be inoperative or it may not be possible to insert or eject CDs.

Cause

A mechanical failure of the IRC CD mechanism may cause the CD mechanism to jam.

When the IRC is in this state, the CD drivers can remain turned on and draw significant amounts of current (up to 1600ma (1.6 amps)).

Correction

Important: Revised IRC software is being developed that will turn the CD drivers off should a mechanical error occur. When this software is released, an updated bulletin will be published. Until then, follow the procedure below.

After verifying that vehicle has condition as described above, replace the radio with new or changeover remanufactured unit.

Important: Do not attempt to remove customer CDs from the unit as this may cause damage which is not covered by the new vehicle warranty. Enclose a return address for return of removed CDs which will be returned to the customer following diagnosis.

Do not return the vehicle to the customer until the IRC is replaced as battery discharge could occur.
