Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Right Side
Removal Procedure
- Remove the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.

- Remove the acoustic engine cover. Refer to
Acoustic Engine Cover Replacement
.
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Remove the generator bracket and braces. Refer to Generator in
Charging System.
- Remove the spark plug wire from the ignition module. Refer to
Spark Plug Wire in Engine Wiring.
- Remove the ignition coil bracket with the following items:

- Remove the vacuum lines from the valve cover.
- Remove the cover bolts.
Important: If the cover adheres to the cylinder head, remove by bumping the end
of the cover with the palm of hand or soft rubber.
- Remove the cover.
- Clean the sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and the valve
cover with degreaser.
Installation Procedure
- Install the new rocker arm cover gasket.
- Apply sealant, GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent, at the cylinder
head to lower manifold joint.
- Install the right rocker arm cover.
- Hand tighten the rocker arm cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
- Install the vacuum lines from the valve cover.
- Install the ignition coil.

- Install the spark plug wires to the ignition module.
- Install the generator bracket and braces. Refer to Generator in
Charging System.
- Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Install the acoustic engine cover. Refer to
Acoustic Engine Cover Replacement
.
- Install the negative battery cable.
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Left Side
Removal Procedure
- Remove the acoustic engine cover. Refer to
- Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement
.
- Remove the thermostat bypass pipe clip nut.
- Remove the PCV valve from the cover.
- Remove the left rocker arm cover bolts.
- Remove the left rocker arm cover.
Important: If the cover adheres to the cylinder head, remove by bumping the end
of the cover with palm of hand or soft rubber mallet.
Installation Procedure
- Install the gasket.
- Install the left rocker arm cover.
- Apply ultra black RTV sealer, GM P/N 12345739, or equivalent.
Notice: Install the valve rocker cover bolts finger tight before tightening
the bolts to specification or damage to the valve rocker cover may occur.
- Install the cover.
- Install the cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·mmm (89 lb in).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the spark plug wire to front spark plugs.
- Install the thermostat bypass pipe.
- Install the PCV valve to the cover.
- Install the engine mount strut. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement

- Install the acoustic engine cover. Refer to
- Inspect for proper fluid levels and oil leaks.
