Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.

- Remove the air cleaner duct. Refer to Air Cleaner in Engine Controls.
- Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Heater, Ventilation and Air
Conditioning.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
- Remove the radiator hoses from the engine. Refer to Cooling and
Radiator.
- Remove the heater hoses. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
- Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement
.
Important: Relief the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure in Engine Fuel.
- Remove the fuel lines. Refer to Fuel Lines in Engine Fuel.
- Remove the engine wiring harness connectors:
• | The air conditioning sensor |
• | The radiator cooling fan |
• | The body wiring harness connectors |
- Remove the vacuum lines from the engine.
- Remove the brake booster hose. Refer to Brake Booster in Vacuum
Booster System
- Remove the transaxle shift control cable. Refer to Automatic Transaxle
On-Vehicle Service.
- Remove the A/C compressor lines. Refer to Heater, Ventilation
and Air Conditioning.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to vehicle support in General
Information.
- Remove the wiring harness grounds.
- Remove the exhaust/converter pipe from the manifold. Refer to
Exhaust Converter in Exhaust System.
- Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Inner Fender Splash
Shield in Body Front End.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft brackets from the lower control arms.
Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Brackets in Front Suspension.
- Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Power
Steering Gear Unit Repair.
- Remove the lower ball joints from the knuckles. Refer to Lower
Joints in Front Suspension.
- Drain the transaxle fluid. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle
Service.
- Remove the transaxle cooler lines and bracket from the transaxle.
Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
- Remove the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle.
- Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle/struts.
Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion
steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or
intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control
which could result in an accident and possible personal injury
- Remove the pinch bolt/screw at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer
to Steering Column.
- Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to
Steering Column.
- Support the engine/transaxle/frame with the transaxle table.
- Remove the frame to body bolts/screws. Refer to Body Dimensions,
Frame and Underbody.
- Remove the lower engine/transaxle/frame from the vehicle.
- Remove the engine from the transaxle/frame to engine stand.
Installation Procedure
- Install the engine from the transaxle/frame to engine stand.
- Install the lower engine/transaxle/frame from the vehicle
- Install the frame to body bolts/screws. Refer to Body Dimensions,
Frame and Underbody.
- Remove the transaxle table.
- Install the intermediate shaft to steering gear. Refer to Steering
Column.
Caution: When installing the intermediate shaft make sure that the shaft is seated
prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling
before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage. Disengagement
of the two mating shafts will cause loss of steering control which could result
in personal injury.
- Install the pinch bolt/screw at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer
to Steering Column.
- Install the drive axles to the steering knuckle/struts.
- Install the transaxle cooler lines and bracket from the transaxle.
Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
- Install the lower ball joints from the knuckles. Refer to Lower
Joints in Front Suspension.
- Install the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to
Tie Rod Ends in Power Steering Gear Unit Repair.
- Install the stabilizer shaft brackets from the lower control arms.
Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Brackets in Front Suspension.
- Install the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Inner Fender
Splash Shield in Body Front End.
- Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tires and Wheels.
- Install the exhaust/converter pipe from the manifold. Refer to
Exhaust Converter Pipe In Exhaust System.
- Install the wiring harness grounds
- Lower the vehicle
- Install the A/C compressor lines. Refer to Heater, Ventilation
and Air Conditioning.
- Install the transaxle shift control cable. Refer to Automatic
Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
- Install the brake booster hose. Refer to Brake Booster Hose in
Vacuum Booster System.
- Install the vacuum lines from the engine.
- Install the engine wiring harness connectors:
• | The air conditioning sensor |
• | The radiator cooling fan |
• | The body wiring harness connectors |
- Install the fuel lines. Refer to Fuel Lines in Engine Fuel.
- Install the throttle body bracket and cables. Refer to Throttle
Body Bracket and Cables in Driveability and Emissions.
- Install the engine mount strut. Refer to
Engine Mount Strut Replacement
.
- Install the heater hoses. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
- Install the radiator hoses. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
- Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
- Recharge the refrigerant. Refer to Heater, Ventilation and Air
Conditioning.
- Fill the transaxle fluid.
- Install the air cleaner duct. Refer to Air Cleaner in Engine Controls.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Inspect for proper fluid levels and leaks.
