Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement Oil Pan Replacement
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling in Cooling and Radiator.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Drive Belt Replacement.
  4. Remove the generator brackets.
  5. Remove the power steering pump.
  6. Remove the belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
  7. Remove the coolant by-pass adapter. Refer to Coolant By-Pass Adapter in Cooling and Radiator.
  8. Remove the coolant hose from the water pump. Refer to Coolant Hose in Cooling and Radiator.
  9. Remove the water pump from the pulley. Refer to Water Pump in Cooling and Radiator.
  10. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  11. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  12. Remove the front cover bolts.

  14. Remove the front cover.
  15. Remove the gasket.
  16. Clean the mating surfaces of the front cover and cylinder block and clean the sealing surfaces with degreaser.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Apply sealer GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to both sides of the lower edges of the front cover gasket where the gasket contacts the oil pan gasket.
  2. Install the new front cover gasket. Do not damage the sealing surfaces.
  3. Install the new seal. Refer to

  5. Install the front cover.
  6. Install the front cover bolts.
  7. Tighten

        • Tighten the large bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft)
        • Tighten the small bolts to 21 N·m (15 lb ft)

  11. Install the coolant hose from the water pump. Refer to Coolant Hose in Cooling and Radiator.
  12. Install the coolant by-pass adapter. Refer to Coolant By-Pass Adapter in Cooling and Radiator.
  13. Install the belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
