Removal Procedure
- Remove the oil pan. Refer to

- Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling in Cooling
and Radiator.
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to

- Remove the generator brackets.
- Remove the power steering pump.
- Remove the belt tensioner. Refer to
Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement

- Remove the coolant by-pass adapter. Refer to Coolant By-Pass Adapter
in Cooling and Radiator.
- Remove the coolant hose from the water pump. Refer to Coolant
Hose in Cooling and Radiator.
- Remove the water pump from the pulley. Refer to Water Pump in
Cooling and Radiator.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
.
- Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
- Remove the front cover bolts.
- Remove the front cover.
- Remove the gasket.
- Clean the mating surfaces of the front cover and cylinder block
and clean the sealing surfaces with degreaser.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Apply sealer GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to both sides of the lower
edges of the front cover gasket where the gasket contacts the oil pan gasket.
- Install the new front cover gasket. Do not damage the sealing
surfaces.
- Install the new seal. Refer to
- Install the front cover.
- Install the front cover bolts.
Tighten
• | Tighten the large bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft) |
• | Tighten the small bolts to 21 N·m (15 lb ft) |
