Action

Binding ball joints

  1. Inspect the ball joints. Refer to Ball Joint Wear Check in Front Suspension in Suspension.
  2. Replace the ball joints if necessary. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension Suspension.

Front wheels out of alignment

Inspect the front wheel alignment. Refer to Preliminary Alignment Inspection in Wheel Alignment.

Sticking steering gear valve

  1. Flush the power steering system. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System .
  2. Refill the power steering system. Refer to Refilling the Power Steering System .
  3. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  4. Service partial steering gear if system persists. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement

Loose steering gear

Tighten the steering gear mounting bolts to specification.

Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

Intermediate shaft bolt torque too high

Tighten the intermediate shaft bolt to specification.

Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Steering Wheel and Column.

Rack preload misadjusted (too high)

Tighten the rack preload to specification.

Refer to Steering Gear Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

Binding steering column

  1. Inspect the steering column alignment.
  2. Adjust the steering column alignment if necessary. Refer to Steering Column Replacement

Incorrect tire pressure

Inflate the tires to specification.

Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications in Maintenance and Lubrication.
