Spare Ignition Key Available

Tools Required

J 35628-A VATS/PASS Interrogator Tester

Use the J 35628-A or equivalent in order to determine the proper value or code of the ignition key resistor pellet.

  1. Insert the customer's spare ignition key into the key code reader on the J 35628-A .
  2. Turn on the J 35628-A .
  3. A number from 1 to 15 will appear in the window of the J 35628-A . This number is the resistor pellet code of the ignition key.
  4. Cut a new ignition key with the resistor pellet code identified with the J 35628-A .
  5. Start the engine using the new ignition key. This will verify that the ignition key is mechanically and electrically correct.

The dealer vehicle invoice contains the resistor pellet and the mechanical cut key codes. Use the following procedure if the dealer invoice is not available. This procedure will determine the resistor pellet code that is programmed on the vehicle. This procedure does not explain how to determine the mechanical cut key code. In order to determine the mechanical cut key code, refer to General Information.

  1. Cut a new ignition key which has no resistor pellet. This test key will be used to operate the ignition switch for the remaining steps.
  2. Remove the sound insulator panel under the left side of the instrument panel. Refer to Sound Insulator Panel in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  3. Disconnect the 2-cavity connector leading into the steering column.
  4. Important: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraints (SIR) system. Do not confuse the SIR 2-way yellow connector with the theft deterrent key resistor connector.

  5. Close the left front door.
  6. Insert the male half of the connector into the female pigtail connector from the J 35628-A .
  7. Set the resistor pellet key code selector on the J 35628-A to 1.
  8. Crank and start the engine using the key made in Step 1. If the engine cranks and starts, the resistor pellet key code selector matches the resistor pellet code that is programmed on the vehicle.
  9. Cut a new ignition key with this resistor pellet code. The new ignition key will be the customer's replacement ignition key.
  10. If the engine does not crank, complete the following steps:

8.1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
8.2. Turn the resistor pellet key code selector on the J 35628-A to the next higher position.
8.3. Wait for 4 minutes. Crank and start the engine using the new resistor pellet key code. Use the 4-minute timer on the J 35628-A in order to indicate the 4-minute interval.
8.4. Start the timer by depressing the start rocker switch. The red indicator will turn off at the end of a 4-minute interval.
8.5. Repeat steps 8.1-8.4 until the engine starts.
8.6. Cut a new ignition key with the resistor pellet code that allowed the engine to start.
