Water Pump Replacement 3.8L

Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.

  4. Object Number: 46174  Size: SH
  5. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump pulley.
  7. Remove the power steering pump and reposition. refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.

  8. Object Number: 46177  Size: SH
  9. Remove the water pump bolts.

  10. Object Number: 46178  Size: SH
  11. Remove the water pump.
  12. Remove the water pump gasket.
  13. Clean and inspect the water pump mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the water pump gasket.
  2. Install the water pump.

  3. Object Number: 46177  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the water pump bolts.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the long water pump bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) plus 40 degrees.
        • Tighten the short water pump bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft) plus 80 degrees.

  6. Install the water pump pulley.
  7. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  9. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
  10. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.
  11. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  12. Inspect for leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 3.4L

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the drive belt guard.

  4. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  5. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L.
  6. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley.

  8. Object Number: 622760  Size: SH
  9. Remove the water pump bolts.
  10. Remove the water pump (1).
  11. Remove the water pump gasket (2).
  12. Clean the water pump mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gasket (2).
  2. Install the water pump (1).
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the water pump bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  6. Install the water pump pulley.
  7. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb in).

  9. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.4L.
  10. Install the drive belt guard.
  11. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  12. Inspect for leaks.
