Some customers may comment on an unusual engine noise, usually described as a loud whine or roar, when the vehicle is first started. The noise is more noticeable in cold temperatures and goes away after the vehicle warms up.
The cooling fan clutch rotates at a speed lower than engine RPM except when exposed to cold temperatures. The viscosity of the clutch fluid is increased or the flow of the clutch fluid is decreased in cold weather. This causes the fan to rotate at a higher RPM than normal and causes noticeable noise in the engine compartment. After several minutes of vehicle operation, the clutch begins to work and slows the fan, therefore reducing the noise.
A new cooling fan clutch, P/N 88986801, is available to correct this condition. Replace the cooling fan clutch following the service procedure in the Engine Cooling sub-section of the Service Manual.
