The power door lock system consists of the following components:
• | The left front power door lock switch |
• | The right front power door lock switch |
• | The side door power door lock switch |
• | The rear power door lock switch (except on cutaway models) |
• | The power door lock relay |
• | The power door lock control module. |
With the actuation of a single door lock switch, the power door lock system locks or unlocks all of the doors. Each of the power door lock switches have 2 contacts and each power door lock actuator motor has supplied voltage and ground. Power is available at all times from the PWR ACCY Fuse A.
Depressing the upper portion of the rocker switch in order to unlock the doors closes 1 contact. This applies voltage to the unlock coil in the power door lock relay. Because the other side of the relay's coils are grounded, the coil energizes. The relay contacts then operate in order to apply voltage to the power door lock actuator motors. The power door lock actuator motors operate in a direction that will unlock the doors.
Depressing the lower portion of the power door lock switch, in order to lock the doors, closes the other contacts. When this set of contacts are closed, voltage is supplied to the lock coil in the power door lock relay. The lock coil is then energized allowing the power door lock actuator motors to operate in a direction that will lock the doors.
The power door lock control module, controls the activation of the power side door lock actuator motor. With the side door open, actuation of the lock function locks the front doors and the rear door immediately. However, the side door lock actuator motor does not operate, because the contacts at the side door contact plate are open. When the power door lock control module receives a command voltage with the side door open, the signal is grounded through the side door jamb switch. This activates the delay function of the power door lock module. The control module waits for the opening of the side door jamb switch with the closure of the side door. The closure of the door and opening of the door jamb switch starts a timer which, after approximately 5 seconds, the power door lock control module produces another lock command. After the side door is closed, the side door contact plate makes contact and the side door locks.
If during the 5 second delay, the side door reopens, the power door lock control module remains enabled. The power door lock control module again waits for closure of the side door. The side door will lock 5 seconds after the side door closes. If, during the timing process, the module receives a command for unlocking all of the doors, both the logic and the timer reset. The side door does not lock, even when the door is already closed.
