Start the engine and allow to reach operating temperature.

Does the temperature gauge indicate normal?

  1. Connect a scan tool to read the actual engine coolant temperature.
  2. Operate the engine.
  3. Compare the actual engine coolant temperature and the temperature indicated by the instrument cluster temperature gauge.

Are the actual engine coolant temperature and the indicated coolant temperature within the specified value of each other?

  1. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.
  2. Place the ignition switch in RUN.

Does the temperature gauge indicate COLD?

  1. Disconnect the instrument cluster.
  2. Connect a J 39200 DMM between instrument cluster connector cavity B9 for CKT 35 (DK GRN), and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Is continuity present?

The temperature gauge functions properly.

Inspect the engine cooling system for operating conditions. Refer to Engine Overheating in Engine Cooling.

Repair the short to ground in CKT 35 (DK GRN) between the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor and the instrument cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor. Refer to Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Replacement in Engine Cooling.
