Possible Cause

Correction

The tire pressure is low.

Adjust the tire pressure. Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications in Maintenance and Lubrication.

The suspension or the ball joints lack lubrication (worn/contaminated joints).

  1. Lubricate the joints.
  2. Re-lubricate the joints at proper intervals.

  3. Replace the joints, if needed. Refer to Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement or Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.

Binding is present in the following components:

    • The steering linkage
    • The ball joints

Replace all of the affected parts. Refer to Ball Joint Wear Check in Front Suspension or Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage.

The steering gear to the column is not in alignment.

Align the steering column.

The pump belt slips.

Replace the belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement 5.0/5.7L or Drive Belt Replacement 4.3L or Drive Belt Replacement 6.5L Diesel or Drive Belt Replacement 7.4L in Engine Mechanical.

The fluid level in the reservoir is low.

  1. Fill the reservoir to the proper level.
  2. Inspect the lines and the joints for external leakage. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump Leaks .

The steering gear or the pump leak internally.

Refer to Power Steering System Test .

The flow control valve sticks.

Replace or clean the valve. Refer to Power Steering Pump Flow Control Valve Replacement - Off Vehicle .

The lower coupling flange rubs against the steering gear adjuster plug.

Adjust the over-center and thrust bearing preload to specifications. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle or Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

The front wheels are not in alignment.

  1. Inspect the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
  2. Adjust the alignment to the specifications.
