Possible Cause

Correction

The gear is loose on the frame.

  1. Inspect the gear mounting bolts.
  2. Tighten the bolts to the specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

Looseness is present in the steering linkage.

  1. Inspect the linkage pivot points for wear.
  2. Replace the linkage pivot points, if needed. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).

A pressure hose touches other parts of the vehicle.

Adjust the hose position.

Do not bend the tubing by hand.

The pitman arm is loose.

Tighten the pitman arm nut. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

The over-center adjustment is not proper.

A slight rattle may occur on turns due to increased clearance off of the high point. This is normal. Do not reduce clearance below the specified limits in order to eliminate this slight rattle.

Adjust the steering gear to the specifications. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .
