Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 5892-C Valve Spring Compressor
  1. Open the hood.
  2. Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the engine cover from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  5. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  7. Remove the push rod from the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  8. Remove the valve rocker arms from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  9. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .

    Important: Do not release the compressed air from the cylinder. The valve will fall into the cylinder and may cause damage.

  11. Remove the valve keepers as follows:
  12. • Install the J 23590 into the spark plug hole.
    • Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.
    • Install the valve rocker arm bolt.
    • Use the J 5892-C to compress the valve spring.
    • Remove the valve keepers.
    • Carefully release the spring tension. Remove the J 5892-C .

  13. Remove the cap (2) and the spring (4).
  14. Remove the valve stem oil seal (3).

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23590 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 5892-C Valve Spring Compressor

  1. Install the valve stem oil seal (3).
  2. Install the spring (4) with the damper (5).
  3. Install the cap.

  4. Object Number: 66450  Size: SH
  5. Install the valve keepers as follows:
  6. • With compressed air still applied, compress the valve spring with the J 5892-C .
    • Install the valve keepers. Apply grease to hold the valve keepers in place.
    • Carefully release the spring tension. Make sure the valve keepers do not move. Remove the J 5892-C .
    • Release compressed air from the cylinder.
    • Remove the J 23590 from the cylinder head.
  7. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .
  8. Install the push rods into the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  10. Install the valve rocker arms to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  11. Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  12. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
  13. Install the engine cover in the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  14. Close the hood.
