Subject:Unable to Perform The Steering Position Torque Sensor Calibration Procedure

Models:2007 Chevrolet Equinox
2007 Pontiac Torrent

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

The "SERVICE POWER STEERING" warning message comes on with a DTC C056E 4B after replacing the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) or steering column assembly. When following the instructions on the Tech 2 to perform the Steering Position/Torque Sensor calibration procedure, the technician may get a message on the Tech 2 "Procedure Failed" or "Possible Wrong Vehicle Selected",

Recommendation/Instructions:

Follow the instructions listed below to perform the Steering Position/Torque Sensor calibration.

Note: Since there is no steering assist when performing this procedure, it is easier to perform this procedure with the front wheels off the ground.

  1. Tech 2 version 27.001 or newer should be used.
  2. Use the Tech 2 and select Chassis > Electric Power Steering > Special Functions > steering position/torque sensor learn procedure. Follow instruction on the Tech 2. (Then press continue).
  3. • Start the Engine, Then center the steering wheel (press continue)
    • Turn off ignition (turn the key all the way off)
    • The Tech 2 screen will flash for about 20 seconds "Waiting".
    • Then the Tech 2 screen will display "turn the ignition on" press enter. Do not start the engine.
    • Turn the steering wheel to the left 180 degrees then hold the steering wheel in this position and then press continue.
    • Turn the steering wheel to the Right 180 degrees "past center" and then hold the steering wheel in this position, then press continue.
    • Turn the steering wheel back to the center position and let go of the steering wheel, then press continue.

If the Tech 2 displays "Procedure Failed" perform the procedure again, but try to turn the steering wheel a little faster. This is a timed procedure, and the "Procedure Failed" message can mean the time expired. It is also important that the steering wheel is not touched on the step "g" when pressing the continue button. If there is any torque applied to the steering wheel the "Procedure Failed" message will also be displayed. If the "Possible Wrong Vehicle Selected" message is displayed, just start the procedure over again.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
