Subject:Harsh Garage Shift and/or 2-3 Shift Flare or 3-4 Shift Flare

Models:2005-2007 Chevrolet Equinox
2006-2007 Pontiac Torrent

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Vehicle may have concern of a harsh / delayed (greater than 3 seconds) garage shift which will also have a complaint of a 2-3 shift or a 3-4 shift flare.

This condition could be caused by very small contamination particles internal to the valve body.

These particles may affect a pressure control solenoid function or cause a valve to bind or stick.

Recommendation/Instructions:

  1. Follow all basic published diagnostics that include checking proper fluid level @ 65°C on a known level surface.
  2. If a previous repair(s) have been performed, to include engine repair, radiator replacement, and collision repairs, which would result in draining or high loss of ATF, check prior repair order(s) for the usage of the correct part number fluid.
  3. If any DTCs are present follow the flow chart for the DTC.
  4. In some cases, there has been success using one or both of the following procedures:
  5. 4.1. Using a Tech 2, cycle the solenoids on and off (full min / max) in an attempt to flush / free up this particle from the solenoid bore.
4.2. Road test the vehicle at higher engine RPMs (50 - 100% throttle) to increase line pressure and returning to a stop along with making numerous shifts. (aka: stop & go driving)

Notice: The road test procedure should be performed in a manner not to cause internal damage to the clutch packs due to excessive slippage and all local speed limits & weather conditions should be observed.)

4.3. If this does not correct concern contact TAC for more information.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
