Transmitter Programming Scan 100

Important: All transmitters, which are to be recognized by the intelligent switching unit (ISU), must be programmed in a single programming sequence. Up to 4 transmitters can be the programmed to a vehicle's keyless entry system. A minimum of 2 keys are required to perform the procedure. You must obtain all the keys from the vehicle owner before programming any current or new keys. Any vehicle keys not programmed during the programming procedure will be inoperative after the programming sequence is completed. Ensure that the doors, hood and trunk/rear hatch are closed prior to starting the programming procedure. If the system is placed in program mode, then the ISU will erase all previously programmed transmitters upon the receipt of the first transmitter's programming signal. Do not operate or program the transmitters in the vicinity of other vehicles that are also in the keyless entry program mode. This prevents the programming of the transmitters to the incorrect vehicle.

The remote keyless entry (RKE) system allows for the use of as many as 4 transmitters for each vehicle. Replacement remote keyless entry system transmitters must first be programmed to specific vehicle using the scan tool.

This process is completed using serial data communication between the scan tool and the intelligent switching unit (ISU).

Transmitter Programming Procedure

  1. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  2. Turn the scan tool ON.
  3. From the MAIN MENU screen, select DIAGNOSTICS.
  4. From the MODEL YEAR screen, select the appropriate model year of the specific vehicle.
  5. From the VEHICLE TYPE screen, select the specific vehicle model.
  6. From the SYSTEM SELECTION MENU screen, select BODY.
  7. From the BODY SELECTION MENU screen, select CODING.
  8. From the CODING SYSTEM screen, select CODING.
  9. From the SECRET NUMBER OF CODINGS screen, enter 4 zeros 0-0-0-0 in the 4  boxes labeled 1-2-3-4.
  10. From the CODING SYSTEM SELECT screen, select KEYLESS ENTRY.
  11. Important: A slight delay may occur and PLEASE WAIT may be displayed before the next screen appears.

  12. From the ISU RKE CODING screen, select KEY CODING.
  13. When directed by the scan tool, press any button on the first transmitter to be programmed.
  14. Important: Ensure that transmitters from other vehicles in the immediate area are not activated during this procedure.

  15. Continue programming transmitters when directed by the scan tool until all transmitters have been programmed.
  16. Important: A maximum of 4 transmitters may be programmed to a vehicle.

  17. Once all transmitters have been programmed, press the ESC Button on the keypad. The display will confirm the number of transmitters programmed. If the number displayed does not match the number of transmitters programmed, repeat the procedure.
  18. Turn the scan tool OFF, and then disconnect it from the DLC.
  19. Wait approximately 10 seconds, and then test the operation of each programmed transmitter to ensure it operates properly. The ISU leaves the programming mode automatically and switches to the normal operating mode when either of the following conditions occurs:
  20. • The scan tool is disconnected from the DLC.
    • Four passwords are recorded in the ISU.

Transmitter Programming Tech 2

Important: Do not connect the scan tool to the DLC before the key is placed in the ignition. If the scan tool is connected before the ignition is turned ON, then communication errors and the programming procedure may not complete.

Test Programming Procedure

  1. Acquire the 6-digit code from the tag provided with the keys at delivery. If you are unable to locate the tag, a General Motors Dealership can obtain the 6-digit security code from the Part Locator System.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Select IMMOBILIZER PROGRAMMING FUNCTION from the BODY menu.
  5. Follow the scan tool instructions with each key until all keys are programmed. Use the following to enter the 6-digit security code to proceed.
  6. • Up arrow to enter numbers
    • Down arrow to enter letters
    • Left/right arrows to move to the next space
  7. Cycle the ignition 3 times as indicated by the scan tool.
  8. Turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
  9. Disconnect the scan tool.
  10. Test the operation of all keys.
  11. Important: If any key does not operate properly, make note of that key.

  12. If any key does not operate properly, perform this procedure once with all keys.
  13. If the same inoperative key does not function after repeating the transmitter programming procedure, then refer to Keyless Entry Does Not Program .
