DTC Descriptors
DTC P2070: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Open
DTC P2071: Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) Valve Stuck Closed
Circuit/System Description
The engine control module (ECM) supplies the intake manifold tuning (IMT) valve position sensor with a 5-volt reference circuit, a low reference circuit, and a signal circuit. The IMT valve position sensor provides a signal voltage that changes relative
to the IMT valve angle. The ECM can determine if the IMT valve is stuck open, or stuck closed by monitoring the voltage on the signal circuit of the IMT valve position sensor.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | DTCs P0660, P0661, P0662, P2077, and P2078 are not set |
• | The engine has been running for greater than 10 seconds. |
• | The ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts. |
• | The ambient air temperature is greater than -10°C (14°F). |
• | The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor is greater than 0°C (32°F). |
• | The DTCs run continuously once the above conditions are met. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
P2070
The ECM detects that the IMT valve is stuck open.
P2071
The ECM detects that the IMT valve is stuck closed.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTCs P2070 and P2071 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTCs P2070 and P2071 are Type B DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification
- Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Verify DTC P0642 or P0643 are not set.
- Engine idling, command the IMT valve ON with a scan tool and observe the IMT valve vacuum actuator moves to the closed position.
- Engine idling, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTCs P0660, P0661, P0662, P2077, and P2078 should not set.
- Engine idling, verify the scan tool IMT position sensor voltage parameter is within 0.90 to 1.00 volt.
- Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that are captured in the Freeze Frame/Failure Records List.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the intake manifold tuning (IMT) position sensor.
- Ignition OFF for at least 20 seconds, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit and ground.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
- Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit and ground.
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
- Install a 3-A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit and the 5-volt reference circuit. Verify the scan tool IMT valve position sensor voltage parameter is greater than 4.8 volts.
⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
Important: Perform the Learn IMT Valve Adapts procedure when replacing the IMT valve position sensor.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the IMT valve position sensor.
