Diagnostic Fault Information

Important: Always perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) applies voltage to the folding top cover release relay control circuit based on folding top cover release switch supply voltage signal from the tonneau release. The folding top cover latch actuator is supplied battery voltage via the BATT3 fuse through the TONNEAU RELEASE relay. When the tonneau release switch is pressed, the folding top cover release switch supply voltage circuit is grounded. This input will request the BCM to apply voltage to the folding top cover release relay control circuit, which will switch the TONNEAU RELEASE relay. With the relay contacts close, battery voltage is supplied to the folding top cover latch actuator, opening the folding top cover.

Diagnostic Aids

If a hardtop is installed or a malfunction exists within the header latch switch or its associated circuits, the folding top cover will be inoperative.

Circuit/System Verification

Press the tonneau release switch. The TONNEAU RELEASE relay should emit an audible click and the folding top cover should release.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the tonneau release switch.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit and ground.
  3. If greater than 1 ohm, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Install a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the release switch supply voltage circuit and ground. With a scan tool, verify the Tonneau Release Switch parameter is ACTIVE.
  5. If not ACTIVE, test the release switch supply voltage circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  6. Connect the harness connector at the tonneau release switch.
  7. With a scan tool, verify the Tonneau Release Switch parameter cycles between ACTIVE and INACTIVE with each press of the tonneau release switch.
  8. If the parameter does not cycle, replace the tonneau release switch.
  9. Remove the tonneau release relay.
  10. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the relay coil ground circuit and ground.
  11. If greater than 1 ohm, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  12. Verify the folding top cover actuator is deactivated.
  13. If the actuator is still activated, repair the relay switch control circuit for a short to voltage.
  14. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the relay switch voltage supply circuit and ground.
  15. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the voltage supply circuit for an open/high resistance. If the tonneau release fuse is open, test the voltage supply circuit for a short to ground. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the folding top cover latch actuator.
  16. Disconnect the harness connector at the folding top latch actuator.
  17. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the latch actuator ground circuit and ground.
  18. If greater than 1 ohm, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance
  19. Connect the harness connector at the latch actuator.
  20. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the relay switch voltage circuit and the release actuator control circuit. Verify the release actuator is activated.
  21. If the actuator is not activated, test the release actuator control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the folding top cover latch actuator.
  22. Connect a test lamp between the relay coil control circuit and the relay coil ground circuit.
  23. Using a scan tool, command the tonneau release ON and OFF. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  24. If the test lamp remains ON all the time, test for a short to voltage on the release relay control circuit. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
If the test lamp remains OFF all the time, test for a short to ground or open/high resistance on the release relay control circuit. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
  25. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the tonneau release relay.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the tonneau release switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the ground terminal and the supply voltage terminal with the switch in the open position.
  3. If less than infinite resistance, replace the tonneau release switch.
  4. Test for less than 1 ohm between the ground terminal and the supply voltage terminal with the switch in the closed position.
  5. If greater than 1 ohm, replace the lid release switch.
