Info - Battery Testing Using Essential Tool J-42000 Battery Tester

Subject:Battery Testing Using Essential Tool J-42000 Battery Tester

Models:2001 Chevrolet Corvette

This bulletin is being sent to dealers to describe the testing procedures needed to accurately test the new Professional Platinum Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery used in the 2001 Chevrolet Corvette.

Every General Motors dealer received a J-42000 Battery Tester. The J-42000 Battery Tester is part of the essential tool package required for each dealer. The J-42000 tester has decreased the time required, and improved the accuracy of battery testing. When testing batteries, the technician must be aware of the proper test procedures. Worn-out batteries may be passed by the J-42000 tester if the proper test procedures are not followed.

All 2001 Corvette models use a Professional Platinum AGM battery that is significantly different than lead/acid batteries used in other General Motors vehicles, both cars and trucks. When testing the Professional Platinum AGM battery, the technician must be aware of the proper test procedures.

A revised instruction tag accompanies this bulletin. The revised tag replaces the original tag attached to the J-42000. The new tag should be permanently attached to the test leads of the tool.

The revised tag contains the following information:

Notice: When testing batteries, always consult the battery label for the CCA of the battery. The CCA value must be entered into the J-42000 prior to the test. Worn out batteries may be passed and good batteries may be failed by the J-42000 if the proper CCA is not entered into the tester before the test.

When testing Professional Platinum AGM Batteries , always consult the battery label for the correct testing CCA. The AGM battery label may contain a specific CCA rating for use with the J-42000 battery tester. Failure to use the correct testing CCA rating for the J-42000 may cause the tool to pass worn out batteries. If the AGM battery label does not contain a specific J-42000 CCA rating, add 100 CCA to the rating listed on the battery.

Connecting the Tester

  1. Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal.
  2. Connect the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal.
  3. To ensure a proper connection, rock the clamps back and forth.
  4. If the battery cables are connected, perform the "In Vehicle" test.
  5. • Only test at the battery to cable terminals.
    • Do not test at jumper posts.
  6. If the battery fails the "In Vehicle" test, disconnect the battery cables. Install and tighten the terminal adapters (or GM P/N 12303040) provided with this tester. DO NOT USE STEEL BOLTS. DO NOT REMOVE THE BATTERY FROM THE VEHICLE. Re-test using the tester's "Out of Vehicle" Test.
  7. Write "Out of Vehicle" test code, displayed on the J-42000, on the Repair Order.

Troubleshooting

If the display does not illuminate, inspect for the following possible causes:

    • Verify the connection to the battery.
    • The battery may be too low (below 5.5 volts) to test or power the tester. Charge the battery and re-test.
