Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle Non-Telescoping

Removal Procedure

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the tilt lever from the steering column. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .

  4. Object Number: 95692  Size: SH
  5. Remove the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  6. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws from the lower trim cover.

  7. Object Number: 328807  Size: SH
  8. Perform the following steps to remove the lower trim cover:
  9. 6.1. Tilt the trim cover down.
    6.2. Slide the lower trim cover back to disengage from the upper trim cover.

  10. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws (2) from the upper trim cover (1).
  11. Remove the upper trim cover (1).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 323848  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper trim cover.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Secure the upper trim cover (1) with2 TORX® head screws (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1.4 N·m (12 lb in).

  5. Perform the following steps to install the lower trim cover:
  6. 3.1. Check that the slots on the lower trim cover engage with the tabs on the upper trim cover.
    3.2. Tilt the lower trim cover up and snap the trim covers together.

  7. Install the2 TORX® head screws (1) to the lower trim cover (2).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  9. Install the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  10. Install the tilt lever. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  11. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  12. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.

Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle Telescoping

Removal Procedure

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the tilt lever from the steering column. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .

  4. Object Number: 95692  Size: SH
  5. Remove the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  6. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws from the lower trim cover.

  7. Object Number: 446719  Size: SH
  8. Seperate the lower trim cover tabs from the slots in the steering column close out trim cover.
  9. Remove the telescope acuator assembly switch wires routed in clips along the bottom of the lower trim cover.
  10. From the inside of the lower trim cover, push out the telescope acuator assembly switch.
  11. Disconnect the telescope acuator assembly switch connecter from the instrument panel wiring harness.
  12. Remove the telescope acuator assembly switch and wires from the trim cover.
  13. Remove the lower trim cover.

  15. Remove the 2 TORX® head screws (2) from the upper trim cover (1).
  16. Seperate the upper trim cover tabs from the slots in the steering column close out trim cover.
  17. Remove the upper trim cover (1).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 323848  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper trim cover to the steering column close out trim cover.
  2. Check to ensure that the tabs on the upper trim cover are fully engaged with the slots in the steering column close out trim cover.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   4. Secure the upper trim cover (1) with 2 TORX® head screws (2).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the upper trim cover screws to 1.4 N·m (12 lb in).

  6. Install the telescope acuator assembly switch and wires thru the opening in the lower trim cover.
  7. Snap the wiring to the retaining clips in the lower trim cover.
  8. Route the telescope acuator assembly switch wires along the column and strap.
  9. Connect the telescope acuator assembly switch connecter to the instrument panel wiring harness.
  10. Install the lower trim cover tabs into the steering column close out trim cover.
  11. Check to ensure that the tabs on the lower trim cover are fully engaged with the slots in the steering column close out trim cover.

  12. Object Number: 328799  Size: SH
  13. Install the 2 TORX® head screws (1) to the lower trim cover.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the 2 TORX® head screws to 4.0 N·m (35 lb in).

  15. Install the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  16. Install the tilt lever. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  17. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  18. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
