New Product Information F Car
The purpose of New Product Information is to highlight or indicate
important product changes from the previous model year.
Changes may include one or more of the following items:
• | Torque values and/or fastener tightening strategies |
• | Changed engine specifications |
• | New sealants and/or adhesives |
• | Disassembly and assembly procedure revisions |
• | Engine mechanical diagnostic procedure revisions |
• | New special tools required |
• | A component comparison from the previous year |
Torque Values and/or Fastener Tightening Strategies
• | The new service thread repair tools and service procedures are
identified. |
• | A second design connecting rod bolt may be used. The proper fastener
tightening value MUST be used with the correct bolt. |
New Sealants and/or Adhesives
No sealant or adhesive changes from the previous year. Refer to
Sealers, Adhesives, and Lubricants
.
Disassembly and Assembly Procedure Revisions
• | The piston, pin, and connecting rod are to be serviced as an assembly. |
• | Newer design pistons have a graphite coated piston skirt. The
coated skirt outside diameter (OD) may be slightly larger than the
cylinder bore inside diameter (ID) and the piston assembly may have
a slight interference fit to the cylinder bore during initial installation. |
Engine Mechanical Diagnostic Procedure Revisions
All diagnosis on a vehicle should follow a logical process. Strategy
based diagnostics is a uniform approach for repairing all systems. The diagnostic
flow may always be used in order to resolve a system problem. The diagnostic
flow is the place to start when repairs are necessary. For a detailed
explanation, refer to
Strategy Based Diagnosis
in General Information or
Diagnostic Starting Point - Engine Mechanical
in Engine Mechanical.
New Special Tools Required
• | The proper thread repair procedures for aluminum cylinder blocks
and cylinder heads have been added. |
• | J 42078 is
not required for installation of the second design seal and shim assembly. |
A Component Comparison from the Previous Year
• | The engine coolant air bleed system has been changed to a two
point system with the coolant air bleed pipe mounted to the front top area
of both cylinder heads. |
• | The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system has been deleted. |
• | Crankshaft main bearing clearances are reduced. |
• | A second design valve stem oil seal and shim assembly may be used
on later engines. |

A Component Comparison from the Previous Year
• | The 5.7 L now uses cast iron exhaust manifolds with bolt
on heat shields. |
• | Both the LS1 and LS6 have new design camshafts. Valve lift specifications
have changed. |
• | The LS6 has unique cast aluminum cylinder heads. |
• | The LS6 has a unique valve spring with a copper plated spring
shim (first design). |
• | A second design valve stem oil seal and shim assembly may be used
on later engines. |
• | The LS6 has a unique design valley cover/PCV valve and hose/ventilation
system. |
• | Crankshaft main bearing clearances are reduced. |
