Creak from Steering Wheel

Symptom

Creak when turning the steering wheel.

Possible Cause

The steering wheel surround tabs are moving on the steering wheel hub.

Diagnosis

Road test at a very slow speed turning the steering wheel from lock to lock while pushing and pulling on the rim of the steering wheel.

Corrective Action

  1. Remove the drivers inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
  2. Spread the surround tabs and remove the surround from the hub.
  3. Lubricate the steering wheel hub where the tabs make contact and also lubricate the cover edges at the spokes with a petroleum free lubricant GM P/N 12345579, or equivalent.
  4. Reinstall the surround and the inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.

Itch from Instrument Cluster Bezel


Object Number: 516069  Size: SH

Symptom

Itch from the instrument panel cluster.

Possible Cause

The lower right hand cluster lens snap hook is not securing the lens allowing the lens to rub against the cluster bezel.

Diagnosis

Road test and apply pressure to the lower right hand corner of the lens and listen for itch to go away.

Corrective Action

  1. Remove the cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  2. Remove the bezel from the cluster. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster Trim Plate Bezel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  3. Fully engage the lower right hand snap hook and glue a 1.7 mm (1/16 in) thick shim under the snap fit hook to secure the lens.
  4. Install the cluster. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster Trim Plate Bezel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Glove Box Door Rattle

Symptom

An itch or rattle from the glove box door area.

Possible Cause

The glove box door is out of adjustment.

Diagnosis

Road test the vehicle per the customers description of when the itch or rattle happens.

Corrective Action

Adjust the glove box door striker. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Door Lock Striker Adjustment in Instrument Panel Gauges and Console.

Rattle from the Forward Outer Edge of the Instrument Panel Pad


Object Number: 384432  Size: SH

Symptom

Rattle from the forward edge of the instrument I/P panel pad.

Possible Cause

Not enough insulator foam between the instrument panel and the pad.

Diagnosis

Road test and apply hand pressure to the forward edge of the instrument panel pad to find the location of the rattle.

Corrective Action

  1. Remove the Instrument panel pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  2. Install added insulation at the point of rattle to the underside of the pad.
  3. Install the I/P pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Squeak in Brake Pedal

Symptom

Squeak in the brake pedal.

Possible Cause

Lack of lubricant in the brake pedal pivot.

Diagnosis

Apply pressure to the brake pedal and listen for squeak.

Corrective Action

Lubricate the brake pedal pivot pin.

Rattle from Sunshade


Object Number: 180482  Size: SH

Symptom

Rattle from the sunshade.

Possible Cause

The sunshade rod end is vibrating in the retention clip.

Diagnosis

Road test and apply pressure to the sunshade and listen for noise to change.

Corrective Action

Replace the retention clip tightening the screw to 2 N·m 17 lb in).

Rattle from Windshield Header


Object Number: 171538  Size: SH

Symptom

Rattle from the windshield header.

Possible Cause

The rear view mirror is vibrating on the mirror mounting support.

Diagnosis

Road test and apply pressure to the mirror and listen for the noise to change.

Corrective Action

  1. Tighten the mirror mount tension screw. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Stationary Windows.
  2. If the rattle still exist, replace the mirror.
