After servicing steering system components the SWPS Plausibility Test must be completed.

The SWPS Plausibility Test will verify the proper relationship between all steering system components and the SWPS. This test will help prevent misdiagnosis of the SWPS.

  1. Point the front wheels straight ahead.
  2. Using a scan tool in ABS/TCS or ABS/TCS/Active Handling Data List check the Steering Wheel Position Sensor Analog voltage.
  3. If the voltage is between 2 and 3 volts the SWPS Plausibility Test is complete. If the voltage is not between 2 and 3 volts continue to step 4.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  5. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR). Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  6. Remove the Inflatable Restraint Wheel Module Coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  7. Remove the Intermediate Shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  8. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, engine off.
  9. Using a scan tool in ABS/TCS or ABS/TCS/Active Handling Data List monitor the Steering Wheel Position Sensors analog voltage as you rotate the steering column shaft.
  10. Turn the steering column shaft until the analog voltage is close to 2.5 volts.
  11. If the analog voltage does not get close to 2.5 volts perform the Diagnostic System Check - ABS . If the voltage does get close to 2.5 volts continue to step 12.
  12. Leave the steering column shaft centered at 2.5 volts, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  13. Install the Intermediate Shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  14. Install the Inflatable Restraint Wheel Module Coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  15. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  16. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, engine off.
  17. Using a scan tool clear DTC C1286 if set.
  18. Drive vehicle above 30 Km/h (18 mph) for several minutes.
  19. Using a scan tool check for DTC C1286. If DTC C1286 sets as a current DTC perform the Diagnostic System Check - ABS . If DTC C1286 is no longer set as a current DTC the SWPS Plausibility Test is complete.
