Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 33432-A Transverse Leaf Spring Compressor
    • J 42188 Ball Joint Separator
    • J 41803 Engine Support Fixture
    • J 28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the generator from the accessory mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the washer solvent resevoir. Refer to Washer Pump/Reservoir Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
  4. Remove the engine coolant switch electrical connector and reposition.
  5. Remove the front headlamp electrical connector and reposition.
  6. Support the engine using J 41803 and J 28467-B .
  7. Raise the vehicle and support. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  8. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  10. Loosen the tie rod end stud nuts (3).
  11. Separate the tie rod ends (5) from the steering knuckles (4) using J 42188 .

  13. Remove the stabilizer shaft bolts and clamps.
  14. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms.
  15. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle.

  17. Remove the power steering (PS) cooler bolts.
  18. Disconnect the PS cooler from the crossmember and reposition it upward.

  19. Object Number: 65352  Size: SH
  20. Remove the PS gear retaining bolts.
  21. Remove the PS gear from the crossmember and reposition it upward.

  22. Object Number: 65337  Size: SH
  23. Install J 33432-A to the spring.
  24. Compress the spring.

  25. Object Number: 65335  Size: SH
  26. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolts.

  27. Object Number: 65333  Size: SH
  28. Loosen, but do not remove the lower ball joint nuts.
  29. Separate the lower ball joints using J 42188 .
  30. Remove J 42188 and the lower ball joint stud nuts.
  31. Disconnect all of the electrical connections from the crossmember.
  32. Remove the bolts from the brake pressure modulator valve bracket.
  33. Reposition the electronic brake control module/brake pressure modulator valve (EBTCM/BPMV) and bracket away from the crossmember.

  35. Remove the engine mount-to-crossmember nuts.
  36. Support the crossmember with a transmission jack.
  37. Remove the crossmember nuts.
  38. Discard the crossmember nuts.
  39. Remove the transmission jack and the crossmember.

    Important: Note the position of the locating dowels when removing the mount.

  41. Remove the upper engine mount nut.
  42. Remove the engine mount.

  44. Remove the engine mount bracket bolts from the engine block, (if required).
  45. Remove the engine mount bracket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 74083  Size: SH
  1. Install the engine mount bracket.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the engine mount bracket bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the engine mount bracket bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    Important: When installing the engine mount, be sure to have the metal end facing up and the locating dowels in the correct position.

  5. Install the engine mount upper stud to the engine mount bracket.
  6. Install the engine mount upper nut .
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the engine mount upper nut to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

  8. Install the crossmember.
  9. Install new crossmember nuts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the crossmember nuts to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  11. Install the engine mount lower stud-to-crossmember nuts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the engine mount lower stud-to-crossmember nuts to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

  13. Connect all of the electrical wiring to the clips on the crossmember.
  14. Install the brake pressure modulator valve bracket and bolts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to the brake pressure modulator valve bracket to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  16. Install the transverse leaf spring to the crossmember. Refer to Front Transverse Spring Replacement in Front Suspension.

  17. Object Number: 65335  Size: SH
  18. Install the shock absorber lower mounting bolts.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the shock absorber lower mounting bolts to 28 N·m (20 lb ft).

  20. Install the lower control arm ball joint studs to the steering knuckles.
  21. Install the lower control arm ball joint stud nuts.
  22. Tighten

    1. Tighten the lower control arm ball joint stud nuts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) to seat the ball joint stud.
    2. Tighten an additional 210 degrees.
    3. Check the ball joint stud nut for a minimum final torque of 70 N·m (52 lb ft).
  23. RemoveJ 33432-A from the spring.

  25. Install the PS gear to the crossmember.
  26. Install the PS gear bolts.
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the PS gear bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  28. Install the PS cooler to the crossmember.
  29. Install the PS cooler bolts.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the PS cooler bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).


    Object Number: 179305  Size: SH
  31. Install the front stabilizer shaft to the crossmember. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
  32. Install the tie rod end studs (5) to the steering knuckles (4).

  33. Object Number: 82236  Size: SH
  34. Install the tie rod end stud nuts (3).
  35. Tighten

    1. Tighten the tie rod end stud nuts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft) to seat the tie rod end stud.
    2. Tighten an additional 160 degrees.
    3. Check the tie rod end stud nut for a minimum final torque of 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
  36. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies.
  37. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel nuts to 140 N·m (100 lb ft).

  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Remove J 41803 andJ 28467-B from the engine.
  40. Install the washer solvent resevoir. Refer to Washer Pump/Reservoir Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
  41. Connect the engine coolant switch electrical connector.
  42. Connect the front headlamp electrical connector.
  43. Install the generator to the accessory mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  44. Connect the negative battery cable.
  45. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  46. Program the Transmitters. Refer to Transmitter Programming/Synchronization in Keyless Entry.
