DEFINITION: The muffler rattles with or without the loss of engine power.

Inspect for a plugged catalytic converter.

Is the catalytic converter plugged?

Go to Step 2

Go to Step 3

1. Replace the intermediate pipe. Refer to Intermediate Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
2. Inspect the engine performance.

Does the muffler still rattle?

Go to Step 3

System OK

Inspect for the proper fuel.

Is the fuel leaded?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Fill the fuel tank with unleaded fuel.

Does the muffler still rattle?

Go to Step 5

System OK

Replace the muffler. Refer to Muffler Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

Are the repairs complete?

System OK
