Outside door handle to lock rods that become disengaged on 1987-1988 Berettas may be due to an insufficient bend angle on the lower end of the rod.
Figure 1 shows the components behind the cover on the door lock frame. Item 3, Figure 1 is the rod which requires the bend angle repair.
Once the lock rod has been removed from the door (following manual instructions) the lower end of the rod should be placed in a vise and the angle increased from 90 degrees to approximately 105 degrees (See View A).
Prior to reinstalling the rod, it is important that all free play between the outside handle and lock assembly be removed.
Adjust
1. By applying slight downward pressure on the lock lever.
2. While lever is held down, rotate the outside handle-to-lock rod until the end of the rod is aligned with the hole in the attaching clip on the lock assembly.
Inspect
Door lock system for proper operation.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
