- Position the steering column transmission shift lever to the park position
(P).
- Apply the parking brake.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Position the transmission
range select lever to the park position (P). This is done by rotating the
lever clockwise until the lever reaches the full clockwise stop position.
- Rotate the range select lever clockwise until the lever reaches
the full clockwise stop position.
- Slide the retaining clip
forward on the cable end of the range select lever.
This will allow the lock button to be pushed out.
- Partially push the lock button out on the cable end of the range
select lever.
This will free the metal core adjust body which is inside the cable
end.
Do not push the lock button completely out.
- Inspect the metal core
adjust body on the cable end for dirt or debris that may restrict the travel.
- Remove debris by washing the following items with soap and water:

- Replace the cable assembly if the travel of the metal core adjust
body remains restricted after cleaning. Refer toShift Cable Replacement
.
- Lower the vehicle.
- With the parking brake still applied, turn the ignition switch
to the ON position.
- Move the transmission shift lever from the park (P) position to
1 and back to the park position (P) 10 times.
- Place the steering column transmission shift lever in the park (P)
position.
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Position the transmission range select lever to the park (P) position.
This is done by rotating the range select lever clockwise until the lever
reaches the full clockwise stop position.
- Push in the lock button in order to secure the core adjuster body
inside the cable end of the range select lever.
- Slide the retainer clip
rearward over the cable end until the clip covers the white lock button.
- Lock the clip over the cable end.
- Remove the safety stands.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Ensure that all of the transmission shift light positions (P,
R, N, D, 3, 2, 1) are engaged and illuminated. If this step cannot be completed,
repeat the cable adjustment procedure.
- Position the steering column transmission shift
lever to the park (P) position. The shift position light should illuminate.
If this step cannot be completed, repeat the cable adjustment procedure.
- Ensure that the engine starts in the following positions only:
• | If this step cannot be completed, the park/neutral position switch
may need adjustment. Refer to the Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment
procedure in the 1999 C/K service manual. |
- Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
- Ensure that the ignition key can only be removed with the transmission
shift lever in the park (P) position.
- Start the engine and check the vehicle transmission shifting.
The range select lever cable is properly adjusted if the steering column
shift light positions are the same as the transmission engagements.
- Release the parking brake.
