Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 176295  Size: SH
  3. Remove the pull springs (3).

  4. Object Number: 176291  Size: SH
  5. Remove the guide plate (17).
  6. Remove the holder pin spring cups (10), the springs, and the washers (11).
  7. Remove the shoe lever strut (2) and the spring.
  8. Remove the shoe lever ring (4).
  9. Remove the shoe lever and the washer.

  11. Remove the parking brake shoes (2).
  12. Remove the brake shoe adjuster (4).
  13. Remove the brake shoe adjuster spring (5).
  14. Inspect all parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace the parts if necessary.
  15. Inspect the brake drum for scoring and heat spots. Machine the drum if needed.

  16. Object Number: 176294  Size: SH
  17. Inspect the anchor pin (1) for signs of wear. Replace the anchor pin as needed.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Lubricate the shoe pads and adjusting screw threads with a thin coat of Lubricant Silicone Grease GM P/N 18010908 or equivalent. DO NOT allow lubricant to contact brake linings.

  1. Install the brake shoe adjuster (4) and the spring to both sides.

  2. Object Number: 176291  Size: SH
  3. Install the parking brake shoes (5).
  4. Install the shoe lever and the ring.
  5. Install the shoe lever strut (2) and the spring.
  6. Install the holder pin spring washers (11), the springs, and the cups (10).
  7. Install the guide plates (17).

  9. Install the pull springs (3).
  10. Install the drum.
  11. Adjust the parking brake. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment .
