CAMPAIGN: LIGHT DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH 700R4 TRANS.

General Motors has determined that some early 1982 CK 10 and 20 Series Light Duty Chevrolet Trucks equipped with RPO MXO (THM 700 R4 Automatic Transmission) were assembled with potential for transmission failure attributed to deficiencies in the following components: stator shaft, forward roller clutch springs, output shaft and thrust bearing (input planetary/ sun gear.) Any one of these conditions may result in premature failure of the transmission assembly.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Certain early 1982 CK 10 - 20 Series Light Duty Trucks equipped with RPO MXO (THM 700 R4 Automatic Transmission) assembled. at the following plants from the Start of 1982 Production up to and including the following breakpoints are involved:

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, Owner Name and Address Data, and are furnished to the involved Dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing for the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.

Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.

OWNER NOTIFICATION

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by Chevrolet Motor Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).

NOTE: Owners of record who have previously had their transmission assembly replaced (with transmission production build date code 326 or later) were not sent owner notification.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

This recall campaign is to be performed at no charge to owners on all affected vehicles regardless of time, mileage, or ownership.

PARTS INFORMATION

Transmission Assemblies (consignment) RPO MXO (THM 700 R4) required to complete this modification must be ordered through your Chevrolet Manager Zone Service Operations. EACH DEALER VIN LISTING INCLUDES THE TRANSMISSION PRODUCTION CODE.

The 700 R4 transmission produced by Chevrolet Toledo has a production code stamped on the right side of the pan rail.

Replacement 700 R4 Automatic Transmission assemblies received by the dealer from the Toledo Transmission Plant will be identified as follows:

Stock Vehicles Stock vehicles still in dealer inventory will require a complete new 700 R4 Automatic Transmission assembly which will be identified with a "Yellow" background transmission identification code label.

NOTE: New transmissions may be used for in-service vehicles with zone approval.

Sold and Dealer In-Service Vehicles Vehicles which have been placed In-Service (vehicles in owner's hands and Dealer In-Service vehicles) will require a complete revised 700 R4 automatic transmission assembly which will be identified with a "Blue" background transmission identification code label.

Note: Under no circumstances will a revised transmission assembly be installed in a new and unused vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Remove the original transmission assembly and install the replacement transmission assembly according to the instructions contained in the 1982 Chevrolet Light Duty Truck Shop Manual, Page 7A-18 for "C," models and Page 7A-20 for "K" Models.

o Remove the transmission dipstick, dipstick tube and throttle valve cable. Install these using new seals provided with the replacement transmission. Also, transfer the speedometer driven gear and related parts on "C" models.

o On "K" models, transfer the new seal (adapter to case) from the shipping extension to the adapter. Reinstall the used seal on the shipping extension and assemble to the transmission being returned.

o Remove all plastic shipping plugs from the replacement transmission, and install in the transmission being returned.

Special care must be exercised when adjusting the Throttle Valve Cable. Failure to adhere to the procedures in the 1982 Light Duty Truck Shop Manual, Page 7A-4, could result in erratic shifts and/or damage to the transmission. If the TV cable cannot be adjusted, replace. Cables are to be obtained from Warehousing and Distribution Division of General Motors and a warranty claim submitted only for the TV cable replacement.

* Campaign Administrative Allowance

** Dealers will be credited $8.06 for the transmission fluid used in conjunction with this replacement. This includes the normal 30% dealer allowance. In addition dealers will receive $45.00 allowance for transmission exchange.

Dealers will automatically receive the correct parts and labor allowance based on the Labor Operation performed.

Refer to the Chevrolet Claims Processing Manual for details on Product Campaign claim submission.

Transmission assemblies will be shipped to the dealers on a consignment basis from Chevrolet Toledo Plant Warehouse, Northwood, Ohio, transportation prepaid.

Note: Transmission assembly(s) are not to be ordered from the Warehousing and Distribution Division of General Motors.

Consignment THM 700 R4 Transmission Assembly Return Procedure

All THM 700 R4 transmission assemblies that are removed from vehicles are to be returned immediately.

As you receive replacement transmission (s) in crate(s), one crate will contain pre-printed bills of lading, labels for the return shipment, and instructions for packing and closing the crate.

Examples of these documents are shown in the attached exhibits.

Shipments are to be shipped freight collect (not C.O.D.) and identified as used auto parts.

Bill of Lading and Shipment Preparation

Complete the information between the parentheses as shown on Exhibit B. Hub City and State refers to the location of the American Delivery System agent who delivered the transmission(s).

Return routing should be via the carrier that handled the inbound movement to your dealership which will be shown on the original order request enclosed with the shipment. Pick-up will be made within three (3) days of your call (excluding weekends and holidays).

Remove the inbound labelling and secure the return labels in the same position (Exhibit A).

When more than one transmission is returned, they are to be included on a single bill of lading. Keep the third (memorandum) copy of the bill and give the other two to the carrier.

Enter the tare, net, and gross weight on the bill of lading. The crate (tare) will weigh 40 pounds; the transmission (net) is 173 pounds.

Because of the weight of each package, dealer assistance will be required in loading and unloading the transmission.

If your pre-printed bills of lading are lost, use locally supplied bills and complete them in the same format as Exhibit

Handling of Transportation Claims

Upon discovery of shortage or damage, immediately notify the Chevrolet Manager Zone Service Operations handling the transmission exchange program for a determination of repair or replacement. Any claims for shortage or repairable damage must be filed within thirty days of receiving the material. Warehousing and Distribution Division of General Motors has provided you with Form PC-65 for this purpose. Although this is not a Chevrolet form, it is acceptable for this program. However, on the form itself, dealers should clearly print the phrase "THM 700 R4 TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY RETURN." All procedures for inspection of damage, distribution of claims, documentation, etc., which you have received from WDDGM should be followed, except that all information will be forwarded to the local zone office in care of the exchange program representative (Chevrolet Manager Zone Service Operations).

IMPORTANT: All transmission assemblies being returned must be identified with either a YELLOW or BLUE Parts Return Tag (completed) and attached to each transmission assembly.

YELLOW Parts Return Tags identify transmission assemblies removed from STOCK vehicles only.

BLUE Parts Return Tags identify transmission assemblies removed from IN-SERVICE vehicles only.

The parts return tags will be furnished by your local zone office.

RETURN PACKAGING INFORMATION - The transmission assemblies removed from the involved vehicles are to be returned in the same returnable wood container as the new transmission is received, properly packaged to prevent shipping damage and loss.

NOTE: o Do not destroy or discard removed wood container members as they all must be reused when returning transmissions.

o Observe the position of the transmission as received in the wood shipping crate. The return transmission must be positioned in the same location in the wood container so it is properly restrained.

o Remove wood members A and B as illustrated to access the transmission. If the container is damaged, it must be properly repaired.

o Shipping Aids - Each transmission shipped will include a converter shipping strap and extension (K Models Only). The shipping strap and extension with seal must be removed from the new transmission and properly installed on the transmission being returned.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label." Each label provides a space to include the five digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.

Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean dry sul-face.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE

REFER TO THE CURRENT CHEVROLET SERVICE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUAL AND CLAIMS PROCESSING MANUAL FOR CAMPAIGN HANDLING AND ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES.

Dear Chevrolet Owner:

General Motors has determined that some early 1982 CK10 and 20 Series Light Duty Chevrolet Trucks equipped with RPO MXO (THM 700 R4 Automatic Transmission) were assembled with internal components which may prematurely wear. As a result the transmission may initially exhibit a sluggishness or a delay when shifting into reverse. If the transmission continues to be operated in this condition premature failure can occur resulting in loss of forward and reverse drive functions.

To correct this condition on your vehicle, your dealer will make a warranty replacement of the complete transmission assembly at no charge to you. In order to minimize the inconvenience; your selling dealer will contact you in order to arrange a mutually agreed upon service date as transmission assemblies become available.

However, if the transmission assembly in your vehicle malfunctions prior to your dealer's notification, immediately contact the closest Chevrolet dealer. Instructions for making this correction have been sent to all Chevrolet dealers.

The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist them in making the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid owner reply card and returning it to us.
