Balancer Remover and Installer
Removal Procedure
- Remove drive belt from
the drive pulleys. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the lower fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft balancer.
- Remove the crankshaft
balancer bolt and washer from the crankshaft.
- Using the J 23523-F
remove the crankshaft balancer from
the crankshaft.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer key from the crankshaft.
- Clean the sealant from key and crankshaft.
- Inspect the key and the crankshaft for damage.
- Replace the key if damaged and loose in the crankshaft.
- If a new key is loose in the crankshaft replace the crankshaft.
Installation Procedure
- Apply a small amount of
RTV sealant GM P/N 12346286 to crankshaft balancer key before
installing.
- Lightly tap the crankshaft balancer onto the crankshaft.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Important: When installing the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer, make sure that
the curved part of the washer is pointed away from the engine.
- Install the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer to the crankshaft.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 270 N·m (200 lb ft).
- Install the crankshaft
pulley to the crankshaft balancer.
- Install the crankshaft pulley bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the lower fan shroud to the radiator. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the drive belt on the drive pulleys. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
