J 22102 Front Cover Oil Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 317717  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect both the battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the generator bracket from the engine block. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Important: When performing this service procedure, it is not necessary to evacuate the air conditioning compressor system. Just move the A/C compressor to the side and secure out of the way.

  4. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the engine lift bracket.

  6. Remove the engine oil fill tube from the engine front cover.
  7. Remove the engine lift bracket from the engine block. Refer to Engine Lift Bracket Replacement .
  8. Remove the water pump from the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  11. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover.

  13. Remove the fuel injection drive gear from the camshaft.

  14. Object Number: 59851  Size: SH
  15. Remove the mounting nuts and bolts for the fuel injection pump.

  16. Object Number: 379669  Size: SH
  17. Remove the bolts from the engine front cover.
  18. Remove the bolts from the oil pan to the engine front cover.

  19. Object Number: 59864  Size: SH
  20. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.
  21. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 60269  Size: SH
  1. Use the J 22102 to install a new crankshaft front cover oil seal.

  2. Object Number: 59866  Size: SH

    Important: Make sure that the grooves on either side of the engine front cover are free of oil and dirt before installing the engine front cover.

  3. Apply a 2 mm (3/32 in) bead of gasket maker GM P/N 1052357 to the engine front cover.
  4. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 in) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12345739 to the engine front cover sealing surface that mates with oil pan.

  6. Install the engine front cover to the engine block.

  7. Object Number: 379669  Size: SH
  8. Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: Check the marks on the fuel line clips made during removal. Ensure that the fuel line clips are re-installed on the proper studs.

  10. Install the engine front cover mounting bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and studs to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  12. Install the bolts from the oil pan to the front cover.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  14. Install the fuel injection pump mounting bolts and nuts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and nuts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  16. Install the fuel injection pump drive gear to the fuel injection pump.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (20 lb ft).

  18. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  19. Object Number: 72321  Size: SH
  20. Lubricate the new crankshaft sensor O-ring with engine oil.
  21. Install the crankshaft sensor in the engine.

  22. Object Number: 72320  Size: SH
  23. Install the sensor mounting bolt.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the mounting bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  25. Install the sensor electrical connector.
  26. Install the generator bracket to the engine block. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  27. Install the engine lift bracket to the engine block. Refer to Engine Lift Bracket Replacement .

  28. Object Number: 560506  Size: SH
  29. Install the engine oil fill tube to the engine front cover.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the oil fill tube nuts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  31. Install the A/C compressor to the engine lift bracket.
  32. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  33. Connect both the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to in Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection Engine Electrical.
  34. Reset the TDC off set timing procedure. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Top Dead Center Offset Adjustment in Engine Controls-6.5L (L65).
