Did you perform the Instrument Panel Cluster Diagnostic System Check?

Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.

Does the CHANGE OIL indicator illuminate in the driver information center (DIC) after the displays test?

Go to Step 3

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Install a scan tool.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. With the scan tool, observe the Engine Oil Life Remaining parameter in the PCM Engine Data 2 data list.

Does the Engine Oil Life Remaining parameter display 0%?

Go to Step 5

Reset the engine oil life. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting in Maintenance and Lubrication.

Does the CHANGE OIL indicator turn OFF?

Go to Step 11

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the PCM connector C1.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Observe the CHANGE OIL indicator in the DIC.

Does the CHANGE OIL indicator illuminate in the DIC?

Test the change engine oil indicator control circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Go to Step 11

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the PCM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and to Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the IPC. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and to Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you correct the condition?

Replace the IPC. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 11

Important: Program the replacement PCM.

Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1L.

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
