Did you perform the Instrument Panel Cluster Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Observe the transmission fluid temperature gage.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gage display that the fluid temperature is within the normal operating range?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the transmission fluid temperature gage.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the ignition 3 voltage circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gage and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the ignition 3 voltage circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gage and the ground circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gage.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Connect the transmission fluid temperature gage.
  3. Disconnect the transmission fluid temperature sensor.
  4. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gage display at or below the specified value?

40°C (104°F)

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Connect a 3 ampere fused jumper between the signal circuit and the ground circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gage sensor.
  3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gage display at or above the specified value?

120°C (248°F)

Test the signal circuit of the transmission fluid temperature sensor for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the signal circuit of the transmission fluid temperature sensor for an open, for a short to voltage, or for a high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the ground circuit of the transmission fluid temperature sensor for an open or for a high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
