Power Steering Gear Poppet Valve Adjustment TRW Ross

  1. Inspect the poppet valve adjustment when the following conditions exist:
  2. • The steering stop screws requires adjustment.
    • Different sized tires are installed.
  3. Ensure that the steering stop screws are properly adjusted.
  4. Start the engine. Allow the vehicle to idle.
  5. Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position longer than 5 seconds, as damage to the steering pump may result.

  6. Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise until the steering effort increases - full lock. Do not force the steering wheel.
  7. 4.1. Determine if the pump goes into pressure relief. When the pump goes into pressure relief, engine loading begins and the chassis rises or lowers, depending on the turn direction.
    4.2. If the power steering pump goes into pressure relief while the steering wheel turns counterclockwise, adjust the poppet valve. Refer to Power Steering Gear Poppet Valve Readjustment .
    4.3. If the pump does not go into pressure relief, continue with procedures.

  8. Measure the clearance between the steering stop bolt (2) and the axle center with the steering wheel at full lock.
  9. The clearance should be 3-5 mm (1/8 - 3/16 in) (1).

    If the clearance is not within specifications, adjust the poppet valves. Refer to Power Steering Gear Poppet Valve Readjustment .
