Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal Replacement TRW Ross

1. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).



2. Place a pan underneath the steering gear to catch the oil.
3. Use a seal puller or a pry tool in order to remove the dust seal (5).
4. Remove the retaining ring (6).
5. Use a seal puller or a pry tool in order to remove the oil seal (4). Do NOT scratch the bore.
6. Inspect the pitman shaft surfaces for roughness or pitting. Replace the shaft if the shaft is pitted.
7. Inspect the housing for any burrs. Remove the burrs before installing the new seal.
8. Clean the pitman shaft and the seal areas in clean solvent.

1. Lubricate the new seal (4) with power steering fluid.



2. Use a suitable pipe as a driver in order to install the seal (4) on the pitman shaft.
3. Install the retaining ring (6).
4. Install the dust seal (5).
5. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
6. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal Replacement Saginaw -710

1. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).



2. Place a pan underneath the steering gear in order to catch the oil.
3. Use a seal puller or a pry tool in order to remove the dust seal (6).
4. Remove the pitman shaft seal snap ring (5).
5. Remove the steel washer (4).
6. Use a seal puller or a pry tool in order to remove the oil seal (3). Do NOT scratch the bore.
7. Inspect the pitman shaft surfaces for roughness or pitting. Replace the shaft if the shaft is pitted.
8. Inspect the housing (1) for any burrs. Remove the burrs before installing the new seal.
9. Clean the pitman shaft and the seal areas in clean solvent.

1. Lubricate the new seal (3) with power steering fluid.
2. Use a suitable pipe as a driver in order to install the seal on the pitman shaft. If the service kit is a two-piece seal, be sure to place the nylon inner ring into the recess of the outer seal face.
3. Install the steel washer (4).
4. Install the snap ring (5).
5. Install the dust seal (6).
6. Use the following steps in order to center the steering gear:

6.1.	Turn the steering wheel until the steering wheel stops.

6.2.	Turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction until the steering wheel stops.

Count the number of turns.

6.3.	Turn the steering wheel back one-half the number of turns counted in the previous step.

7. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
8. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
