The parking brake is not designed for use in place of the service brakes. Apply the park brake only after the vehicle is brought to a complete stop, except in an emergency.
The two types of park brake systems used are listed below.
• | The manually operated parking brake system consists of a lever, cable, and drum assembly. |
• | The air applied parking brake system consists of an air actuated spring loaded park brake chamber, park brake apply/release valve, and air lines. |
Both the manual and the air systems use a ground through the ignition switch in order to bulb check the Park Brake Indicator. The ignition switch grounds the indicator when the switch is in the START position.
The manually operated parking brake system is applied using the park brake lever. This applies pulling force to the cable and the park brake bell crank, rotating the cam assembly in order to apply the park brake.
The air applied system is applied by pulling out the park brake apply/release valve. This charges the park brake side of the air chamber which applies the park brake.
