Tools Required
J 29803-A Flaring
Kit
- Use the correct size steel pipe and fittings. The outside diameter of
the pipe specifies the size.
- Cut the steel pipe to the necessary length, plus 3 mm (1/8 in)
for each flare.
- Install the fittings on the pipe before starting the flare.
- Chamfer the inside and the outside diameter of the steel pipe
with a deburring tool.
- Remove all traces of the lubricant from the brake pipe and the
flaring tool.
- Clamp the flaring tool body in a vise.
- Select the correct size collet and the correct size forming mandrel
for the pipe size that you are using.
- Insert the proper forming mandrel in the tool body.
- Hold the mandrel in place with your finger. Thread the forcing
screw in until the forcing screw makes contact and begins to move the forming
mandrel.
- Slide the clamping nut
(1) over the brake pipe and into the correct collet (2).
Leave about 19 mm (3/4 in) of the pipe extending out of
the collet (2).
The brake pipe end must contact the face of the forming mandrel when
you insert the assembly into the tool body.
- Tightly fasten the clamping nut (1) into the tool
body in order to prevent the pipe from pushing out.
- Tighten the forcing screw with a wrench until the forcing screw
bottoms.
Do not over-tighten the forcing screw. Over-tightening the screw will
cause the flare to become oversized.
- Back the clamping nut (1) out of the tool body.
The flare is ready for use when you have disassembled the clamping nut
(1) and the collet (2) assembly.
- Use a pipe bender in order to bend the pipe. Bend the pipe in
order to match the old pipe.
