The Engine Cranks but Does Not Run diagnostic table is an organized approach to identifying a condition that causes an engine not to start on either fuel system. The Engine Cranks but Does Not Run diagnostic table directs the service technician to the appropriate system diagnosis.

The Engine Cranks but Does Not Run diagnostic table assumes the following:

    • The battery is completely charged. Refer to Battery Inspection/Test in Engine Electrical in the J Platform Service Manual.
    • The engine cranking speed is within specifications. Refer to Engine Cranks Slowly in Engine Electrical in the J Platform Service Manual.
    • There is adequate fuel in both of the fuel tanks.

  2. Observe the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Information from the following control modules with a scan tool:
  3. • Alternative Fuels ECM
    • PCM

Does the scan tool display DTCs P0336, P0601, P0602, P1202, P1621, P1626, P1630, P1631 or P1632?

Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List

Go to Step 3

Observe the engine speed with a scan tool while you crank the engine.

Does the scan tool indicate engine speed while the engine is cranking?

Go to Step 4

Go to Electronic Ignition (EI) System Diagnosis

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect a spark plug wire from a spark plug.
  3. Install the J 26792 Spark Tester to the spark plug wire.
  4. Attempt to start the engine.

Does the spark tester spark and is the spark consistent?

    • Restricted exhaust system. Refer to Restricted Exhaust in Engine Exhaust in the J Platform Service Manual.
    • The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is not close to the actual engine temperature. Refer to Temperature Versus Resistance in Engine Controls 2-2L in the J Platform Service Manual.
    • Compare MAP parameter to another vehicle. The parameters should be close in value. Refer to DTC P0106 .
    • TP sensor for being stuck in range.

Did you find and correct the condition?
