Inspect the system for the following conditions:

    • An overfilled reservoir
    • Fluid aeration
    • Fluid overflow
    • Loose hose connections

Verify the exact point of the leakage. The point from which the fluid is dripping is not necessarily the point where the system is leaking. Fluid overflowing from the reservoir may appear to drip from the bottom of the housing.

Important: You may receive the following statements about the power steering system:

  1. Fluid leakage on the garage floor
  2. Fluid leaks visible on the steering gear or pump
  3. Growling noise, especially when the engine is cold or during parking
  4. Loss of power steering when parking
  5. Heavy steering effort
When troubleshooting the statements, inspect for an external leak in the power steering system.

For further diagnosis of leaks, refer to External Leakage Check .

When service is required, perform the following procedure:

  1. Clean the leakage area upon disassembly.
  2. Replace the leaking seal.
  3. Inspect the component sealing surfaces for damage.
  4. Reset the bolt tightening specification, as needed.
