Removal Procedure
- Remove the Automatic Transmission. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Automatic Transaxle -
3T40.
- For vehicles equipped with Manual Transmission, refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Manual
Transmission.
- Remove the flywheel. Refer to
Engine Flywheel Replacement
.
- Confirm the rear oil seal leak.
Important: Do not damage the crankshaft seal surface with the pry tool.
- Remove the seal by inserting
a screwdriver or similar tool in through the dust lip. Pry out the seal by
moving the tool around the seal until the seal is removed.
- Inspect the bore for nicks or burrs. Correct the bores as required.
- Inspect the crankshaft for nicks or burrs on seal contact surface.
Repair or replace the crankshaft as required.
Installation Procedure

Bearing Oil Seal Installer
- Lubricate the seal bore
to the seal surface with engine oil.
- Install the new oil seal. Use the J 34686
- Slide the new seal over the mandrel until the dust lip bottoms
squarely against the tool collar.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Align
the dowel pin of the tool with the dowel pin hole in the crankshaft. Attach
the tool to the crankshaft.
Tighten
Tighten the attaching screws to 3-7 N·m (27-62 lb in).
- Tighten the T-handle of the tool to push the seal into the bore.
Continue until the tool collar is flush against the block.
- Loosen the T-handle completely.
- Remove the attaching screws and the tool.
- Ensure that the seal is seated squarely in the bore.
- Install the flywheel. Refer to
Engine Flywheel Replacement
.
- Install the Automatic Transmission. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Automatic Transaxle -
3T40.
- For vehicles equipped with Manual Transmission, refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Manual
Transmission.
- Start and run the engine. Inspect for oil leaks.
