Some 1987-88 cavalier models may experience a "phantom wipe" condition. Phantom wipe may occur during a cold start; the wipers sweep one time and then park without the wiper switch being on. If this condition occurs, replace the steering column pulse wiper switch.
Note that the part numbers for the switch listed, in group 6.518 of the parts book are incorrect. Usage of these switches will induce a "phantom wipe" condition. Correct part numbers for the pulse wiper switches are listed below:
7848195 - without tilt wheel
7848196 - with tilt wheel
These numbers can be found in groups 2.459 and 10.163 of the parts book. Although the usage indicates 1984 - 1986 models, these parts also apply to 1987 and 1988 Cavaliers as well.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
