The deck lid torque rods on a 1986 to 1987 Cavalier, body style 27, 67 or 69, can rattle against each other if the rods are lightly touching or slightly separated. The condition has been corrected in production by installing a tie strap at the point where the two rods cross.
The same repair can be applied in service should a rattle in the trunk area be caused by the torque rods. Use tie strap, P/N 3816659, and with the rubber spacer in place between the torque rods, wrap the tie strap around the torque rods where they would cross and draw it tight. Trim off the excess length of the tie strap.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
