All Janesville Cavalier 27-69 styles built before July 12, 1982 have rear compartment lid torque rods installed in the reverse position. This condition will not allow full output of the torque rods.
To correct this condition, the torque rods must be reversed from right side to left side as outlined below:
1. Raise rear compartment lid and prop open. Remove right and left quarter wheelhouse trim as required.
2. Using tool J-21412, or equivalent, disengage torque rod end from bracket and allow rod to slowly unwind, remove rod, repeat on other side. Right side unwinds rearward left side unwinds forward.
3. Reinstall rod removed from right side on left, install left rod on right side.
4. Check lid operation, adjust rods as required. Replace all previously removed trim.
Use applicable labor operation.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
