IDLE SHAKE (CORRECT BY SHIMMING ENGINE MOUNTS)

SOME 1982 AND 1983 IMPALAS AND CAPRICES WITH THE 3.8L (LC3) 229 V6 MAY EXPERIENCE AN OBJECTIONABLE SHAKE AT IDLE IN DRIVE MODE. THIS CONDITION IS CAUSED BY GROUNDED ENGINE MOUNTS WHICH RESULTS FROM IMPROPER SPACING OF THE FRAME MOUNT BRACKETS. THIS CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY INSTALLING 6MM OF SHIMS BETWEEN THE LEFT HAND ENGINE MOUNT AND THE BLOCK. THREE (3) 3/8" FLAT WASHERS, P/N 446363, MAY BE USED WITH LONGER BOLTS, P/N 454913, AT EACH LOCATION. IF THE SHAKE IS IMPROVED, BUT NOT TO AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL, THE RIGHT HAND MOUNT SHOULD BE SHIMMED IN THE SAME MANNER.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
