Thrown off, broken, worn or glazed alternator belts may be the result of alternator pulley misalignment to the water pump and crankshaft pulleys.
If this condition is encountered, obtain and install the following parts:
P/N 14079285, spacer (replaces P/N 6262934 - 5.0L and 5.7L).
P/N 14079284, spacer (replaces P/N 3993312 - 3.8L).
P/N 14079250, belt (replaces P/N 9433639).
On those 1982 vehicles equipped with 70 amp alternators, the existing rear brace, P/N 14017795, must be removed, altered per illustration #1, and reinstalled. The existing belt, P/N 9433744, must also be reinstalled or replaced with a new belt of the same part number.
If misalignment still exists, remove P/N 14034010, top alternator bracket, extend inlet manifold slot .08" (2mm) toward front of vehicle and reinstall (see illustration #2).
Retighten all belts to specifications.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
