THIS INFORMATION IS INTENDED FOR DELIVERY TO GM WHOLESALE PERSONNEL, AND WILL BE AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY TO DEALER PERSONNEL. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR PUBLICATION AT THIS TIME.
PRODUCTION AT THE STE. THERESE PLANT IS ON SCHEDULE AND CURRENTLY BUILDING ABOUT 700 "F" CARS A DAY ON 2 SHIFTS.
4L60 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS - IN ORDER FOR POWERTRAIN DIVISION TO GAIN EARLY PRODUCT INFORMATION, CONTACT THE ACTION CENTER WITH TRANSMISSION CONCERNS. FOR CONCERNS WHICH WERE PREVIOUSLY UNIDENTIFIED OR SUFFICIENT INFORMATION IS NOT AVAILABLE, THE ACTION CENTER WILL ARRANGE FOR A NEW S.R.T.A. TO BE SHIPPED FROM THE TOLEDO TRANSMISSION PLANT. THIS PROCESS WILL INSURE POWERTRAIN DIVISION HAS VALID AND TIMELY INFORMATION ON ALL FIREBIRD TRANSMISSION FAILURES. PRELIMINARY RESULTS INDICATE MOST OF THE LATE SHIFT OR NO SHIFT PROBLEMS WERE RELATED TO THE FORWARD CLUTCH CAUSED BY IMPROPERLY ADJUSTED T.V. CABLES AND EXTREME COLD CLIMATE AT THE PLANT. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED AT THE PLANT.
MANUAL 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION EXCHANGE - A BULLETIN IS IN PROCESS BUT UNTIL THEN ANY 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION REQUESTS SHOULD BE HANDLED THROUGH THE ACTION CENTER. AS A SIDE NOTE, THE 5-SPEED EXCHANGE PROGRAM ENDED DECEMBER 31, 1992. ANY 5-SPEED REPAIRS SHOULD BE HANDLED THROUGH REGULAR REPAIR PROCEDURES AT THE DEALERSHIP.
PAINT - THE STE. THERESE PLANT IS WELL AHEAD OF THE PAST FIREBIRDS. HOWEVER, WE STILL HEAR OF OCCASIONAL PAINT CONCERNS. PLEASE HAVE YOUR DEALERS REPORT ANY CONCERNS TO THE ZONE OR DIRECTLY TO ART SPONG THROUGH VOICE MAIL. ONLY BY CONTINUOUSLY ADVISING THE PLANT CAN WE ACHIEVE WORLD CLASS FINISHES. THE LAST 8 OF THE VIN IS CRITICAL AS WELL AS COLOR AND DESCRIPTION OF THE CONCERN. THE PLANT IS WORKING HARD TO CORRECT ANY PROBLEMS AS THEY ARISE AND YOUR FEEDBACK IS THE BEST WAY TO LET THE PLANT KNOW ITS PROGRESS.
TRANSMISSION 3-2 OR 3-1 DOWNSHIFT CLUNK - THIS CAN BE HEARD AS THE VEHICLE SLOWS AND THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTS. THIS NOISE IS ATTRIBUTED TO CLEARANCES IN THE DRIVE TRAIN OF THE VEHICLE. SOME CUSTOMERS ARE MORE SENSITIVE TO THIS NOISE THAN OTHERS. IF YOU GET A CONCERN, CONTACT THE ACTION CENTER WITH THE TRANSMISSION DATE CODE. THE ACTION CENTER HAS A BREAK POINT WHERE HYDRAMATIC MADE A CHANGE BY INSTALLING A NEW J SPACER PLATE TO SOFTEN THE FEEL. IF THE TRANSMISSION HAS THE UPDATE, IT PROBABLY WILL NOT HELP TO CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION. A SECOND CAUSE COULD BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE METHOD WHICH PONTIAC FASTENS THE REAR AXLE AND TORQUE ROD TO THE BODY. THIS GIVES LITTLE PLAY FOR THE DRIVE LINE TO UNWIND AS THE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTS. CONSEQUENTLY, THE DOWNSHIFT CAN BE HEARD AND/OR FELT. MOST CUSTOMERS DO NOT COMMENT, HOWEVER SHOULD A CUSTOMER DISLIKE THE "CLUNK", THE DEALER SHOULD ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT SOME CLUNK IS NORMAL AND TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE. IF THE NOISE IS EXCESSIVE, CHECK WITH THE ACTION CENTER TO SEE IF THAT TRANSMISSION HAS THE SPACER PLATE. IF IT IS ALREADY THERE, CHECK WITH TAC/TAN FOR ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. THE DEALER SHOULD ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THE NOISE CAN NOT BE COMPLETELY ELIMINATED AND THE DEALER CAN ONLY TRY REDUCE IT.
FUEL PUMP NOISE - VAST AMOUNTS OF ENERGY AND RESOURCES ARE BEING USED TO REDUCE THE NOISE. LIKE THE DRIVE LINK CLUNK, EVERY CAR HAS IT. SOME ARE WORSE THAN OTHERS, SOME VEHICLES HAVE INTERMITTENT NOISE. TEMPERATURE, FUEL LEVEL AND ELECTRICAL LOAD ALL INFLUENCE THE NOISE. IF YOUR DEALER HAS WHAT HE CONSIDERS A LOUDER THAN NORMAL FUEL PUMP, CALL THE ACTION CENTER. THE ACTION CENTER WILL HAVE A/C ROCHESTER SHIP A VERIFIED PUMP TO THE DEALERSHIP. A/C WILL FOLLOW-UP TO INSURE THE PUMP CORRECTED THE NOISE. IF IT DID NOT, A/C ROCHESTER WILL HAVE AN ENGINEER CONTACT THE DEALER AND IF NECESSARY VISIT THE DEALERSHIP.
FUEL PUMP NOISE, AXLE NOISE AND DRIVELINE CLUNK - THESE CAN BE ANTICIPATED AND SHOULD BE EXPLAINED TO THE CUSTOMER AT THE TIME OF DELIVERY. THIS COULD HELP REDUCE THE CUSTOMER'S SURPRISE WHEN IT IS DISCOVERED ON THEIR OWN.
INTERMITTENT MISS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (V-6 ENGINE) - A SITUATION HAS BEEN DISCOVERED WHERE THE VEHICLE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED WITH THE WIPERS ON PULSE CAN LOSE ITS CRANK SENSOR REFERENCE AND SHUT OFF THE INJECTORS FOR ONE PULSE. THE CUSTOMER SHOULD BE ASKED IF THE WIPERS WERE ON. IF THE WIPERS WERE ON, YOU SHOULD ADVISE THE CUSTOMER A BULLETIN IS COMING AND A NEW CAM SENSOR SHOULD BE AVAILABLE APPROXIMATELY MAY 30TH. UNTIL THEN, IF THE CUSTOMER USES LOW SPEED ON THE WIPERS THE MISS WILL NOT REAPPEAR. THE MISS IS CAUSED BY ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE. THIS COULD HAPPEN ONCE OR SEVERAL TIMES.
DASH WARP AND DASH RATTLE - THE UPPER DASH PAD IS HELD IN PLACE WITH A HOOK AND LOOP (VELCRO(R)) TYPE FASTENER. AN EARLY REPORT WAS RECEIVED OF A WARPED DASH PANEL. AFTER INSPECTION, IT APPEARED THAT THE PANEL WAS NOT WARPED, HOWEVER, THE GLUE ON ONE OF THE FASTENERS LET GO AND THE IP PAD WAS ALLOWED TO RAISE IN THE CENTER AND APPEAR WARPED. PRIOR TO ANY DASH PAD BEING REPLACED, A VISUAL CHECK SHOULD BE MADE TO INSURE ALL HOOK AND LOOP FASTENERS ARE IN PLACE AND FASTENED PROPERLY. SHOULD A DASH PAD NEED REPLACING, PLEASE HAVE THE DEALER CONTACT THE FIREBIRD PRODUCT QUALITY MANAGER FIRST SO THAT THE PARTS MAY BE RETURNED FOR INSPECTION.
OIL PRESSURE GAGE PEGS (V-6) - IF A COMMENT IS RECEIVED OF A V-6 ENGINE WITH AN OIL PRESSURE GAGE THAT HAS PEGGED TO THE HIGH SIDE, CHECK THE GROUND PATH AT THE SENDING UNIT. THE GROUND CAN BE CHECKED BY RUNNING A REDUNDANT GROUND FROM THE SENDING UNIT TO THE BLOCK OR BATTERY. IF THE GAGE READS NORMAL (40-60 LBS.) REMOVE THE ADAPTER BOLT, CLEAN THE THREADS AND BACK OF BOLT HEAD WITH A WIRE BRUSH TO REMOVE THE COATING AND REINSTALL. A BULLETIN WITH A NEW BOLT IS IN PROCESS.
S.E.S. LAMP CODE 35 (V-6) ENGINE - CHECK THE THROTTLE BODY FOR A MISSING BUSHING ON THROTTLE CABLE END. ON PART OPEN THROTTLE, THERE SHOULD BE NO PLAY ON THE THROTTLE PLATE SHAFT IN A FRONT TO BACK MOTION. IF THERE IS, HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED AND SEND IT TO THE FIREBIRD PRODUCT QUALITY MANAGER. THIS SHOULD BE VERY RARE BUT WE HAVE FOUND A FEW IN THE FIELD.
WATER LAYS ON REAR DECK AND SPOILER - THIS IS A CONCERN AND WE ARE WORKING ON A WAY TO DEFLECT THE WATER AWAY FROM THE HATCH OPENING. NO FIX IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE.
CONSOLE LIGHT STAYS ON - THIS USUALLY WILL HAPPEN AFTER THE CONSOLE LIGHT HAS BEEN BUMPED AND KNOCKED OFF CENTER. A BULLETIN IS IN PROCESS TO ADDRESS THIS. A TRIM TYPE BUTTON WILL BE INSTALLED AT THE PLANT TO GIVE THE SWITCH A LARGER CONTACT AND NEW PARTS WILL BE AT THE PLANT IN JUNE.
BRAKE MOAN - ALL BRAKE COMMENTS SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE ACTION CENTER. IF A MOAN CONDITION EXISTS, REPLACE THE DAMPENERS ON THE REAR. IF THE MOAN CONTINUES AFTER REPLACING THE DAMPENER, CONTACT TAC/TAN.
REAR FASCIA YELLOWING - WHITE PAINT HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE SCHEDULE FOR THE BALANCE OF 1993. THE CORRECTION FOR THE FASCIA YELLOWING HAS BEEN DETERMINED AND IS BEING VALIDATED FOR 1994. THE CURRENT APPROVED FIX FOR YELLOWING AND FUEL STAINING IS TO REPLACE THE FASCIA AND PAINT THE REPLACEMENT PART AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE PAINT PROCESS IN THE DEALERSHIP AIR DRIES AND IS MORE RESISTANT TO FUEL STAINING.
THE ACTION CENTER CAN BE REACHED BY PHONE AT 1-800-463-3227 OR BY FAX AT 1-800-463-3228.
GENERAL MOTORS BULLETINS ARE INTENDED FOR USE BY PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIANS, NOT A "DO-IT-YOURSELFER". THEY ARE WRITTEN TO INFORM THOSE TECHNICIANS OF CONDITIONS THAT MAY OCCUR ON SOME VEHICLES, OR TO PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN THE PROPER SERVICE OF A VEHICLE. PROPERLY TRAINED TECHNICIANS HAVE THE EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND KNOW-HOW TO DO A JOB PROPERLY AND SAFELY. IF A CONDITION IS DESCRIBED, DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE BULLETIN APPLIES TO YOUR VEHICLE, OR THAT YOUR VEHICLE WILL HAVE THAT CONDITION. SEE A GENERAL MOTORS DEALER SERVICING YOUR BRAND OF GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLE FOR INFORMATION ON WHETHER YOUR VEHICLE MAY BENEFIT FROM THE INFORMATION.
