CAMPAIGN: EGR 'T' CONNECTOR WRONG BLEED RESTRICTOR

MODELS: 1982 Camaros and Firebirds With 2.8L (LC1) Engine and Automatic Transmission

TO: ALL AFFECTED DEALERS:

General Motors of Canada has determined that 1982 Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds equipped with 2.8L open-loop Canadian engines and automatic transmissions were built with the incorrect E.G.R. bleed restrictor in the E.C.R. "T" connector. Because of this, the involved models were not represented by the certification vehicle.

The correction consists of replacing the original equipment "T" connector in the E.G.R. vacuum hose harness with a "T" connector with the correct size E.C.R. bleed restrictor.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

1982 Camaros and Firebirds with 2.8L engines and automatic transmissions.

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin. Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your Dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached computer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

PARTS INFORMATION:

Parts required should be ordered through regular channels

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card or RAPID terminal transmission in accordance with the following:

Time allowance includes 0.1 hour for Dealer administrative detail associated with this campaign. Parts credit will be based on Dealer net plus 30% to cover parts handling.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Raise hood of vehicle.

2. Remove air cleaner wingnut.

3. Disconnect crankcase ventilation hose at air cleaner.

4. Remove vacuum hose from thermal vacuum switch (T.V.S.) mounted on side of air cleaner.

5. Disconnect vacuum hose from E.G.R. solenoid at air cleaner.

6. Remove air cleaner.

7. Disconnect the blue "T" fitting from the vacuum hose harness. ("T" connects E.G.R. valve, E.G.R. thermal vacuum switch (T.V.S.) and E.G.R. solenoid).

8. Replace "T" fitting with new "T" fitting that contains a .030" orifice.

9. Connect hoses to "T" fitting. (E.G.R. solenoid to centre port, E.G.R. T.V.s. to large port and E.G.R. valve to remaining port). Refrr to illustration.

10. Connect all vacuum hoses that have been previously disconnected.

11. Install air cleaner.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.

General Motors of Canada has determined that some 1982 Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds with 2.8 litre open-loop Canadian engines and automatic transmissions were built with the incorrect E.G.R. bleed restrictor in the E.G.R. "T" connector. Because of this, the involved models were not represented by the certification vehicle.

Please contact your GM Dealer to arrange a service appointment to have the correct T-connector installed. The labour time required for this modification is approximately 20 minutes and will be performed at no cost to you. Please allow the dealer additional time to process your vehicle.

This letter identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this letter to your Dealer will assist their service personnel in completing the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time.

Further assistance, if required, may be obtained from the General Motors Zone Office nearest you. Your vehicle Owner's Manual provides the lcoation and phone number of each respective Zone Office.
