J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover


    Object Number: 306322  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column support assembly (1) if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

  1. Attach the steering column support assembly (1) to the steering column jacket assembly with 4 new TORX® head screws (2).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  3. Apply lithium grease to the exposed steering shaft.
  4. Align the lower steering shaft assembly at 90 degrees to the race and upper shaft assembly.
  5. Install the lower steering shaft assembly onto the race and upper shaft assembly.

  6. Object Number: 299889  Size: SH
  7. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  8. Object Number: 295949  Size: SH
  9. Install the steering shaft assembly with the steering column tilt head assembly (1) into the steering column support assembly.

  10. Object Number: 560759  Size: SH
  11. Lubricate the pivot pins (1) with lithium grease.
  12. Firmly seat each pivot pin (1) into the steering column tilt head assembly.
  13. Stake the pivot pins (1).

  14. Object Number: 389642  Size: SH
  15. Install the following items to the steering column jacket assembly:
  16. 10.1. The adapter and bearing assembly (1)
    10.2. The sensor retainer (2)
    10.3. The steering shaft seal (3)
    10.4. The inner boot seal (4)

    Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of the coil, which may cause personal injury.

  17. Install the steering column wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  18. Install the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  19. Install the lock cylinder housing, ignition switch assembly and the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid assembly only. Refer to Lock Housing Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  20. Install the turn signal switch housing. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  21. Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
